Changes Made to the Twisted Wonderland Anime English-Language Adaptation: Episode 2

Original Anime Riddle: Trey!

EN Anime Sub Riddle: Trey.
EN Anime Dub Riddle: What is it?

(In the original anime this is the first revelation of Trey’s name.)

Original Anime Riddle: I could never stay calm after having the entrance ceremony completely ruined! This is a serious violation of the rules!

EN Anime Sub Riddle: How can I stay calm when they ruined the entrance ceremony? This is a serious violation of the rules!
EN Anime Dub Riddle: Once this imbecile has been punished for his ruinous behavior and flagrant violation of the rules, then I will be calm!

(Canonically Riddle does not name call anyone.)

Original Anime Riddle: Are you still talking in your sleep?

EN Anime Sub Riddle: Are you still sleep talking?
EN Anime Dub Riddle: Either you’re still sleep talking or mad.

Original Anime Yuuken: Ah, I see. I’m able to go home, then.

EN Anime Sub Yuuken: Great. I can go back.
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: That’s great. I’d love to go back.

Original Game/Manga Dark Mirror: There is no place in this world where this soul belongs. Nothingness.

EN Game Dark Mirror: There is no place in this world where this soul belongs. None.
EN Manga Dark Mirror: I search this world and its vast space, and nowhere do i find his rightful place…I see only emptiness’s embrace.
Original Anime Dark Mirror: This person has no place where they belong.
EN Anime Sub Dark Mirror: This young man…has no place to which he belongs.
EN Anime Dub Dark Mirror: Searched far, have I, through fog and mist. The young man’s home does not exist.

Original Anime Trey: No place where he belongs?

EN Anime Sub Trey: “No place to which he belongs?”
EN Anime Trey: “The young man’s home does not exist”?

Original Manga/Anime Yuuken: I was just there!

EN Manga Yuuken: I was somewhere a few minutes ago!
EN Anime Sub Yuuken: I was just there a moment ago!
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: I just came from there 20 minutes ago.

Original Anime Yuuken: Shit. Where’s the exit?

EN Anime Sub Yuuken: Darn it. Where’s the exit?
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: Darn it. Where’s the exit?

Original Anime Yuuken: It’s no good…shit.

Original Manga Yuuken: No signal…
EN Manga Yuuken: No signal…
EN Anime Sub Yuuken: It’s not working. Crap.
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: No service. Oh, crap.

Original Manga/Anime Yuuken: We finally made it to the point where we are able to enter tournaments, and yet…

EN Manga Yuuken: We were finally ready to start entering tournaments. But now…
EN Anime Sub Yuuken: Just when we were finally able to qualify for a tournament.
EN Anime Yuuken: And just as we finally qualified for one. I’m so sorry, guys.

Original Anime Crowley: And we’ve arrived.

EN Anime Sub Crowley: Well, here we are.
EN Anime Dub Crowley: All right. Here we are, dear boy.

(The EN dub seems to have decided to make “dear boy” into a verbal tic for EN Crowley)

Original Anime Yuuken: Chores?

EN Anime Sub Yuuken: Chores?
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: Sure. Okay.

(EN-dub Yuuken agrees to become a janitor immediately, but originally Yuuken does not agree until the end of the conversation.)

Original Anime Yuuken: I still can’t believe it, a world where magic actually exists.

EN Anime Sub Yuuken: I still can’t believe it. That this is a world where magic exists.
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: I still can’t really wrap my head around this. All the magic and flying.

Original Game/Manga/Anime Ace: So lame!

EN Game Ace: So lame!
EN Manga Ace: What a loser!
EN Anime Sub Ace: How lame!
EN Anime Dub Ace: Because that I’d like to see!

(The word Ace uses here (ダッセー) is a verbal tic with significant relevance in Book 7. More here ▶︎)

Original Anime Yuuken: It’s you! The tanuki from yesterday!

EN Anime Sub Yuuken: You’re that racoon from yesterday.
EN Anime Dub Yuuken: It’s you again. The tanuki!

(It is fascinating that “tanuki” has returned to EN-dub after being removed from 90% of episode one. Maybe only Yuuken is going to be using the word regularly in the EN dub, as he is canonically Japanese?)

Original Anime Grim: That’s right! So why are you still here?

EN Anime Sub Grim: I was. So how come you’re still here?
EN Anime Dub Grim: I notice your non-magical butt is still around.

Original Anime Deuce: Right back at you.

EN Anime Sub Deuce: You’re still here too, you know.
EN Anime Dub Deuce: Yeah, but he wasn’t banned.

Original Manga/Anime Grim: So I decided that I would come here myself! I will never, ever give up. I’m going to be an awesome mage!

EN Manga Grim: So I decided that I would come here myself! I will never, ever give up. I’m going to be an awesome mage!
EN Anime Sub Grim: So, I came here on my own! I’ll never give up. I’m gonna be a super powerful magician.
EN Anime Dub Grim: I’m the best, and I’m gonna get even better. None of you can stop me. I won’t give up.

Original Manga/Anime Ace: But you don’t have the qualifications.

EN Manga Ace: You didn’t have what it takes.
EN Anime Sub Ace: And you didn’t meet those qualifications.
EN Anime Dub Ace: Hate to have to tell you, but l just don’t think kitty made the cut.

Original Game/Manga/Anime Grim: That guy…As if I’d let him say that…

EN Game Grim: You ain’t walkin’ away from me!
EN Manga Grim: Thinks he can talk to me like that…
EN Anime Sub Grim: That jerk. I’ll give him a piece of my mind.
EN Anime Dub Grim: That little twerp. He thinks he can speak to me that way.

Original Anime Grim: Shit!

EN Anime Sub Grim: Take this.
EN Anime Dub Grim: You…

Original Anime Ace: Wait! Tanuki~!

EN Anime Sub Ace: Come back, you raccoon!
EN Anime Dub Ace: Hey, get back here, you stupid cat thing!

Original Anime Crowley: You understand, I presume?

EN Anime Sub Crowley: Do you all understand?
EN Anime Dub Crowley: I want you gone by sundown.

Original Manga/Anime Deuce: After I was able to get into a prestigious school…

EN Manga Deuce: After everything I did to get into a prestigious school?!
EN Anime Sub Deuce: Right when I entered this prestigious school?
EN Anime Dub Deuce: After everything I did to get to this place?

(The EN dub’s wording makes it sound as though Deuce went to extreme effort to get into NRC but in the game/original anime he has yet to mention doing anything in particular.)

Original Anime Crowley: “Anything,” you say?

Original Manga Crowley: Anything…?
EN Manga Crowley: Anything…?
EN Anime Sub Crowley: Oh? “Anything,” you say?
EN Anime Dub Crowley: Oh? Are you quite certain you mean that, my dear boy?

The English-language anime has Crowley using “Mr.” as an equivalent to his “-kun” honorific, which the English-language manga also did up until volume four and the English-language game did until Book 3, where it was dropped. It will be interesting to see if the anime upholds the honorific through to the end or similarly drops it midway.
