Azul has a voice line about wanting to become “friends” with a variety of people, which is a goal he seems to be actively pursuing, mentioning “the spirit of friendship” to Rollo.
He is possibly the one and only non-Kalim NRC Housewarden to claim friendship with another, saying that he considers Riddle a friend (Riddle is incredulous).
Despite what he may claim his motives are for expanding his social circle, based upon his overblot monologue it is possible that Azul actually does want friends: he says that he is no longer the “lonely” octopus that he used to be, and in his dream the darkness tries to keep him asleep by promising him friendship forever.
