Azul and Planning

Azul seems to enjoy planning. After Idia teases him for not liking games of chance (“you don’t think you can win if you can’t plan ahead”) he practices dice rolling until he can roll his desired number 1/3rd of the time.

Idia reacts in surprise when Azul takes “out chance from a game of chance”, saying he “can’t think of anyone more stubborn” but also compliments his work ethic.

(Despite Azul’s blatant dislike of games that require luck, he has a voice line that says, “I would suggest keeping your favorite coin in your pocket as a good luck charm”.)

Jade also compliments Azul as “a quick thinker and a farsighted planner”, saying that is why he considers Azul fit to be Octavinelle housewarden.

During Beanfest Azul reveals that he had been planning since the previous Beanfest—for an entire year—how he would win the event this year. This planning habit is what foils Jamil’s attempt to brainwash Azul in Book 4, as Azul foresees Jamil’s intentions and borrows Floyd’s unique magic to thwart him.

During Phantom Bride the plan to seduce Eliza comes from Azul, who participates with complete confidence that he can “make up for the shortcomings of (his) dormmates, Jade and Floyd”. Azul is rejected by Eliza despite how he “analyzed the first team’s data and came up with the perfect approach by the ghost’s standards…gave her a bouquet of roses and sand a clarion love song”.

Through Jade we learn that Eliza complained that Azul “talked too much and lacked any shred of sincerity”. Azul even plans for a way to ensure his own wish comes true in the Wish Upon a Star event, and when Epel and Deuce admit they have no idea what they want to do in the city during Glorious Masquerade, Azul reveals that he has prepared a plan in advance.

When Azul buys souvenirs for Epel and Deuce in the masquerade event they react with delight, admitting that they had been intimidated by Azul but, clearly, their preconceptions were incorrect. Azul quietly reflects how Vil and Riddle must have their hands full having to look after such trusting underclassmen. Azul says he makes it a point to never incur debts.
