Azul and Grades/Classes

Azul says that, with the exception of flight, he gets high marks in all his classes, but alchemy might be his best.

He says, “I like classes in which results are clearly defined” and “I love lab exercises. As long as you follow the procedure, nothing unexpected will happen.” Jade says, “Azul is close to the top of his whole class year in Potionology,” and in Book 3 we see Azul formulate a potion from that third year students’ final exams.

The students break into three teams prior to their descent into Tartarus in Book 6, with Riddle volunteering to lead the third team as the second-longest serving housewarden.

When Vil asks if, as the other second-year housewarden, Azul has any objections Azul responds, “None at all. Riddle has far better grades than me in both the classroom and in the field,” and later it is revealed that Riddle having better grades is a sensitive point for Azul.

Azul says he is “appalled that someone so mindless is at the top of (their) class after watching Riddle’s approach to the phantoms, and later says he has “never once scored higher than (Riddle) on anything in (their) entire time at school.”

The idea that Azul was trying to beat his grades seems to shock Riddle, which does not amuse Azul: “I have remained consistently in the top 10! Are you saying that I am not a worthy rival?”

Riddle agrees that that is exactly what he is saying, as Azul has too much going on between Mostro Lounge, his consultation services, off-campus research and the study guides he creates for other students to rival him, adding, “You might get perfect scores on tests if you gave your studies your full attention. But you don’t…if you focused solely on your academics, you might claim the top spot. I suppose we’d both be in the top spot, though.”

Azul is shocked to learn that, when taking an exam, Riddle always starts with the first question rather than taking the “more efficient” approach of looking over the entire test and beginning with the problems that are worth the most points.
