Azul, Food and Flight

Azul says he prefers “having a well-defined figure”, possibly as a result of the teasing he received for being overweight as a child.

He seems to follow a strict diet, expressing displeasure that “how many calories everything has” are not displayed on the food offered in the cafeteria.

Azul is capable of listing the exact ingredients in the Mystery Shop’s “Mystery Drink” and their country of origin merely by tasting it. Jade describes him as “a true gourmet”, though both Floyd and Jamil comment on how little Azul eats.

When Azul says that watching Ruggie eat gives him heartburn, Jade says “I believe you could put him to shame if you felt so inclined”, and Azul responds with, “Not another word”.

Azul explains that, for his birthday the staff at his mother’s restaurant would stack the largest table with his favorite foods and that his family was “most insistent I cleaned my myriad plates”.

He says that, in hindsight, it was all a little much, but as a child he was delighted by it.

Azul is, infamously, a poor flyer. Idia refers to himself and Azul as being “close competitors in flight class…in a race to the bottom” and Azul insists that “floating in the sea and floating in the air are two completely different things”.

Floyd and Jade are both poor flyers as well, with Jade saying, “I’m not the most skilled at flying” but “I’m not nearly as bad as Azul” and Floyd similarly saying that, while he’s not sure he’s that great of a flyer, he knows he’s better than Azul and Jade.

Floyd also says that he suspects Azul doesn’t like flying, but Azul claims otherwise, saying, “I don’t dislike flying. Though I don’t know how my broom feels about the matter.” Ruggie says that “watchin’ Azul is flight class is just plain cringey”.

There is a vignette where Azul explains that he must imagine himself “achieving liftoff” and focus, as otherwise his broom goes out of control and flies off on its own.

Azul’s flight problems seem to be his broom refusing to do as it is told, but when Jamil tries to teach him (after being ordered to by Vargas) Azul refuses on the basis that “I’m sure you aren’t teaching me that trick for free. The world doesn’t work that way. I have no wish to be in debt to you. I can only imagine what ridiculous demand you’ll make of me when this over!”

Trapped on the field until Azul is able to fly straight for 50 meters, Jamil pretends to want a study guide for an upcoming exam so that Azul will deign to allow Jamil to teach him how to fly in exchange.
