Azul has issues getting Jack to cooperate during Beanfest, and Jack says that while “Azul’s got smarts”, he doesn’t trust him, as “He seems like he’s always got an angle with everything he says and does”.
Jack usually is fairly strict about using proper honorifics, using “senpai” with older students, but despite his usual strictness about “respecting the chain of command” Jack has issues with adding “-senpai” onto Azul’s name and sometimes refers to him as “Azul” with no honorific at all.
They have another run-in in a vignette where Jack accidentally throws away mushrooms that Jade had been attempting to cultivate in the botanical garden. Jack ends up working in Mostro Lounge for a week, and does so well that Azul offers him a position in the lounge. Jack says no.
In the prologue Azul does not hesitate to call on Riddle for help collaring Grim, but the two do not seem particularly close.
Azul offers his assistance to Riddle with managing the VDC in Book 5 and Riddle refuses outright (“I have no desire to incur any special debts to you”) and Riddle comments that the paperwork Azul draws up for the Spelldrive tournament is “tedious…and that’s coming from me.”
During Spectral Soiree, however, it is revealed that Riddle has more respect for the effort that Azul puts into everything he does than he wants to admit, urgently appealing to the ghost that Azul gets possessed by.
Jade describes his speech as “impassioned” and Azul says that what he has learned about Riddle’s respect for him “Will undoubtedly come in handy later”.
Azul seems to like money very much. He has a voice line about being “an expert at proliferating gold…I mean through alchemy, of course”, and his reaction to learning about Kalim’s unique magic of being able to produce water with little effort is “That’s…ABSURDLY marketable!”
Azul identifies the meteor shower during the Wish Upon a Star event as “Idia’s doing”, saying “It’s a crime to hold such an astonishing show without charging any money!”
Azul says he takes pride in “the strong bond of trust” he has forged with NRC’s professors.
In Book 3 we learn that “betentacled” mer-people are uncommon in places like the Atlantica Memorial Museum. Azul refuses to change into his true form so as not to “draw any undue attention”.
Azul says the goggles of his labwear set are prescription. We learn during Spectral Soiree that, while there are some mermaids who wear glasses, Azul was not one of them. He only began wearing them upon enrolling at NRC, both for vision correction and because he has read that “wearing glasses makes you appear intellectual” on land.
Trey compliments Azul’s glasses, saying that “the rectangular lenses give off a mature vibe, and the sharp silver frame matches your hair nicely.”
While Azul refuses to join the dancing in Book 4 (saying “some things are too tall of an order for merfolk”) he does join during Spectral Soiree, though he says he is “not accustomed to dancing on land”.
Azul says that one of the things that surprised him about coming onto land was pillows: he had been surprised by the way he had sunk into one, and had difficulty getting used to them.
Azul explains that he is always trying new things because “you never know when something will come in handle for business further down the line” and “There’s no such thing as a wasted experience.”
Azul enjoys reading entrepreneur autobiographies “and other such books”, checking them out from the library and reading them in his dorm room “with the lighting nice and low” with his “elegant decor” and coin collection on display to “set the mood”.
Azul says he finds it soothing to “take a moment to admire the environment I’ve cultivated for myself”.
Azul first began coin collecting after finding one in a sunken ship as child that he researched and later realized was a rare collector’s item. He says there are about 200 coins in his collection at the moment, and he has his favorites on display in his room.
