Azul, Jade and Floyd

Azul says, specifically, that “The Leech brothers do not work for or answer to me” during Beanfest, and this seems very much the case: We learn about their dynamic in Book 4 when Floyd explains that while they’ve been classmates since elementary school, he barely knew Azul existed until just before starting middle school, “so I wouldn’t exactly call us childhood friends”.

The three were in a musical trio before NRC with Azul on piano, Jade on bass and Floyd on drums. Floyd explains, “Azul always got mad at me for speeding up the tempo or doing my own thing, though. When we got a groove going, Jade’d match my tempo, then Azul would join in, complaining all the while…good times.”

Jamil says they have “a curious relationship” since now Azul is “presiding over them as housewarden”, but Floyd disagrees, saying, “I just do what Azul says ‘cause it’s more fun that way.”

Azul agrees, explaining, “I strongly doubt that Jade or Floyd have any binding allegiance to me. This is all an elaborate game of pretend to them…if I made a poor choice as leader—or even simply a boring one…they would turn on my instantly and seize the housewarden seat for themselves. Not that I’d lose if they challenged me, of course.”

Floyd follows with “We ain’t got any plans to challenge him either…for now, anyway.” When Jamil asks “So essentially, the three of you are all equals in each other’s eyes”, Floyd agrees, saying, “We stick with him now ‘cause it’s fun. If it stops bein’ fun we drop him like a bad habit. Easy. It ain’t like the vice housewarden is the house warden’s servant or nothin’. It’s a pretty normal relationship, if you ask me.”

Floyd and Jade share an interaction where Jade says he would “never make a contract with (Azul)” out of worry that he would invent excuses to hold his unique magic indefinitely. Floyd responds with “Yeah, I wouldn’t put it past him”, and Azul observes, “I’m standing right here.”

Azul says they’re “two twisted peas in a pod”, “Floyd’s the easier of the two to deal with on many levels since his nature is far more obvious than Jade’s. Jade…is a particular brand of devious. If you see him, don’t provoke him. Don’t make eye contact. Just back away slowly.”

This comment comes full circle by the end of Beansfest, with both Jade and Floyd challenging Azul with empty bean blasters in two separate locations, at two entirely different times without having ever communicated with one another.

We learn in Book 3 that Jade and Floyd often act as enforcers for Azul, and see this in action in a vignette, where Jade explains how he and Azul specialize in “gentlemanly man-to-man combat” while Floyd specializes in “guerrilla warfare”.

In a voice line we learn that Jade and Floyd are always pranking Azul on his birthday, and they invade his dorm room at midnight with birthday cake. For their birthdays Azul encourages their hobbies, gifting Floyd with a shoeshine kit and Jade with a large water tank to use as a terrarium.

In a vignette with Sebek we see the twins appear instantly when summoned. When Sebek asks “Where did you two come from?! More to the point, where were you hiding?”, Azul says “Don’t trouble yourself over petty details.”

In Azul’s ceremonial robes vignette Azul promises Vil a special toner in exchange for ten rare, poisonous plants. After 189 attempts he is no closer to improving upon Vil’s usual toner, and Floyd observes that Azul is “loads more squishy” in his octopus form.

Azul realizes that both Floyd and Jade are also have a certain sheen to their skin in human form, and Vil confirms that all three of them have glossy skin. (There is a change to Azul’s line calling Vil “beautiful” in his original dialogue, rewritten to “handsome” on EN).

Azul and Jade wring out Floyd “like a dirty mop” for Vil’s toner.
