Azul and Music

Floyd says that, in middle school he, Azul and Jade played in a trio with Azul on piano: “Azul always got mad at me for speeding up the tempo or doing my own thing, though. When we got a groove going, Jade’d match my tempo, then Azul would join in, complaining all the while…good times.”

Floyd talks about another time that Azul became angry with him for music-related reasons during Port Fest, saying that the three of them once entered a music competition together, during which he proceeded to put his own “spin” on the music. Floyd says, “The audience loved it, but I got disqualified and Azul really let me have it.”

Azul tells Kalim that he is “a rather adept pianist” and suggests that they perform together sometime.”

When Azul tells Skully that Jamil “prefers louder and more convoluted songs” Jamil retorts, “Don’t you mostly stick to trendy music yourself?” Azul responds, “I’ll have you know I listen to a broad range of genres. That said, the Mostro Lounge does tend to play mainly jazz music…so perhaps jazz is what I personally listen to the most.”

Jazz is also what plays in Azul’s mother’s restaurant during his dream of Book 7, but he declares, “DJ, surely you can play something with more energy than this! We can’t exactly dance to outdated jazz.”
