Cater and Trey (pt1)

Cater and Trey seem to be considered a set by the others: Lilia refers to Trey as Cater’s “partner” and Rook calls Cater Trey’s “boon companion,” the same word he uses to describe himself and Vil.

Cater reveals Trey as his chosen travel partner for Firelit Sky (after building up anticipation), to which Grim responds “No surprises there” (Grim’s original line was 「いつもと代わり映えしない2人組」, which is closer to “the pair that never changes.”)

Malleus also seems to consider them a set pair: when Trey is considering buying cooking spices as a souvenir for Lilia during Firelit Sky, Malleus threatens him with consequences for both Trey and Cater, though Cater had said nothing about purchasing any spices and, in fact, had purchased something entirely different for Lilia already.

Cater cheerleading for Trey (despite Trey’s discomfort) is not unusual: he does the same in Vargas Camp 2 and tells Trey he will be sure to “post some nice pics” on him during Firelit Sky, to which Trey responds “I don’t need the other guys in the dorm teasing me again,” insinuating that Cater’s efforts to build him up may be source of embarrassment for him (Trey is often concerned about being embarrassed, which is an interesting balance to Cater’s love of attention.)

(While Trey spends part of the Wish Upon a Star event actively hiding from people out of embarrassment, Cater says, “What could be better than getting fawned over everywhere you go?”) Trey has a voice line of “Somewhere along the I started hanging out with Cater more often. It’s nice, because I can be myself around him”, insinuating that the embarrassment he feels around others he does not feel around Cater.

Despite Trey’s dislike of the fairy tale dance in Wish Upon a Star Cater still attempts to dance with Trey in the ballroom in Kalim’s house during Firelit Sky (Trey insists he was merely being dragged around).
