Cater, the Prefect and Skateboarding

During our short interactions with Cater in Books 1 and 2 Cater is very friendly with the prefect. He tries to invite himself to an overnight stay at Ramshackle during his third appearance in the story and tells the prefect not to be nervous during a Book 2 visit to Savanaclaw, because “Cay-Cay’s got your back.”

He also is sure to keep the magicless prefect involved in the mock game of Spelldrive against Savanaclaw students by telling them to “read their movements and convey them to us”.

After Book 2 he also announces he wants to join the prefect’s team in the Spelldrive exhibition match, much to Ridde’s confusion.

Outside of the main story Cater adopts Grim and the prefect immediately onto his team during Beanfest risking his own safety to protect them according to Trey, who says, “You won’t last much longer protecting Grim and the prefect. This is where your road ends.”

He looks out for Jade as well during Beanfest, though we do see him sacrifice Deuce to the other team by sending him into a trap, saying, “the less experienced freshmen should get dibs on the gear” and then hiding behind a tree.

Cater may acknowledge Grim more than any other student, staying on top of Grim’s antics during Firelit Sky and telling the player to “take a lead from Grimmy’s book” and “chillax sometimes” in a voice line.

He also draws a picture of Grim in ketchup during his culinary crucible vignette.

Cater refers to himself as like “Heartslabyul’s resident chill big bro”, though Jamil says “That sounds more like Trey” (Cater responds with “Trey’s more like a dad.”).

While we see him take the lead during the welcome party for the first-years in his ceremonial robe vignette, it is only after he loses a bet to Trey for who has to do so.

Jamil says that he has always been impressed by Cater’s ability to look out for people, that he has heard good things about him from Ace and, compared to the upperclassmen in other dorms, he thinks it is wonderful how Cater is always supporting the younger students.

Cater reacts in surprise that Jamil considers him to be a good upperclassmen, and is delighted by the compliment.

Cater is an accomplished skateboarder (which might be connected the sense of balance that makes him such an adept flyer), receiving a skateboard for his birthday from Kalim and a collection of stickers with which to decorate it from Jamil.
