Deuce and Jamil

During Halloween Jamil becomes one of few people (including Ortho, Epel, Silver, Grim and the prefect) aware of Deuce’s violent past, though Deuce has not confessed to him directly:

Deuce is approached by people from his hometown who suggest that they bully NRC’s “prissy rich kids” together and Deuce seems to take them up on their offer, saying it sounds like a blast.

Having overheard them Jamil follows Deuce as he leads the group into the woods behind the school, intending to intervene, but rather than go after the school’s students Deuce drops a cauldron on the visitors, saying, “I’m a new person now. No way am I gonna throw down with my own classmates!”

Deuce says, “If you really wanna step to someone, then hey, I’m game. But if you do anything to harm the school, next time it won’t be candy I chuck at you.”

Jamil is confused (“What did I just witness?”) but does not interfere, reflecting, “I had no idea Deuce could get that rough. There’s clearly more to him than meets the eye.”

Deuce approaches Jamil and Kalim for help with his Starsending Dance during Wish Upon a Star (Jamil: “He’s TOO motivated. He doesn’t have a shred of dignity or grace”) and also receives dance instruction from Jamil during Book 5.

When complimented on how well he explained a painting Deuce admits, “I was parroting what Jamil told me about it when I asked him.”

Deuce wanders over to Jamil’s side of the cafeteria kitchen during Master Chef in order to learn how to filet fish by watching Jamil.

In exchange Jamil asks what kind of food makes him happy when he sees it, incorporating Deuce’s compliments of Trey’s tarts for being “colorful and pretty” into the dish he serves Azul.

Deuce and Jamil overlap in the school store just before Glorious Masquerade, with Jamil encouraging Deuce to pack extra bags for souvenirs, an umbrella, a scarf, cotton swabs and soap sheets.

Deuce tells Jamil he is “really paranoid,” but while in Fleur City Jamil happens upon Deuce carrying souvenirs in his arms because his extra bag has ripped open. 

Jamil shows Deuce how to turn a scarf into a makeshift bag, uses cotton swabs and soap sheets on the stuck zipper of Deuce’s wallet and all three to get a chocolate stain out of Deuce’s shirt (after casting a magic barrier to save himself and Deuce from Grim’s falling ice cream).

Deuce insists on treating Jamil to as many drinks as he wants in thanks and Jamil responds, “don’t worry about paying me back. What would really help is if you stop getting into trouble when I’m around.”

Jamil and Deuce overlap again during New Years: Jamil comes bearing snacks for both Deuce and Kalim, helping Deuce with the store while Kalim is on break, during which time Scarabia students sneak in to try and find an “amazing ticket” inside the store’s mystery bags (“all going according to Jamil’s plan”).

After his hot egg salad sandwich Deuce calls Jamil by his first name for possibly the first and only time in-game (“Jamil-senpai” rather than “Viper-senpai,” as Deuce almost never refers to any upperclassmen by anything but “last-name-senpai”, making this a very rare exception.)
