Upon realizing that Leona has been slacking at his job as substitute groundskeeper in the botanical gardens Deuce asks, “So we should be taking our complaints up with Leona, right?”
Vil asks if Deuce is not intimidated by him and Deuce says, “It don’t matter who you’re talkin’ to. You always gotta be straight,” and “If you wuss out and don’t say what needs sayin’, what’s that make you? A chicken, that’s what.”
Vil responds, “It is not brave to challenge someone without a grasp of their capabilities. It’s reckless.”
When Vil says he wants to address the issue with Leona in person Deuce volunteers to join him.
Deuce and Leona overlap during Vargas Camp when Leona gives both his own spelldrive club members and Deuce and Jack of the track and field team a lecture on how to find magestones (Deuce: “Does he really mean everyone? Like, even if we’re not in his club?”).
Leona both explains what they need to do and shows Deuce how to do it, unearthing a magestone instantly after Deuce and Jack’s search of three hours failed to result in anything at all.
Deuce tells Jack, “your housewarden’s amazing! Not to mention generous, considering he let all of us in on the secret.”
Deuce received his lionwear garb from Leona directly with the comment, “Could be you next year,” possibly implying that Leona may be interested in inviting Deuce to participate in the Cloudcalling event in the future.
When Dream-Trey calls on Deuce to procure a witness for a trial in Cater’s dreamworld of Book 7, Deuce selects the person he thinks would be best at improvising: Leona. (Leona is asleep at the time. He does not wake up.)
When the dream-hopping group gets separated in Riddle’s dream, Leona chooses to join Deuce.
When Deuce asks why he says that Deuce was easy to follow and he didn’t want to run around with the “annoying pests” that were the group of Ace, Sebek, Grim and the prefect. (Deuce: “O-oh…”)
When Leona says he had been expecting Deuce to fall for the fake-Ace’s attempts to lead them against Riddle, Deuce says that the real Ace would never believe that Riddle could easily lose to another Housewarden.
Leona asks if that means Deuce believes he would lose to Riddle and Deuce says, “Er, no! I didn’t say that! It’s true that you’re levelheaded, and smart, and strong. It’s just…Our boss is just as good!”
Leona says that Riddle has “got a decent dog in his kennel,” confusing Deuce, who asks if Riddle has a dog.
While not explicitly stated in dialogue, in visuals it appears that the two are then targeted by a magical attack from the fake-Ace that Leona blocks, protecting Deuce.
When they become trapped in the maze Leona confirms that Deuce has confidence in his speed and then sends volunteers to stand against Riddle’s army of darkness on his own.
When Deuce is worried about being left alone Leona reassures him that, as a card soldier, he knows where he needs to go.
(Darkness Ace: “It’s not like you to stick around and let Deuce run off by himself. You think you’re some kinda hero, Your Highness?” – Leona: “Yeah, that’s right. Deep down, I’m a kindly, caring prince.”)
