Deuce and Ortho overlap in a vignette where Deuce tries to stop Diasomnia students from bullying Ortho, saying that he knows they are going to regret it later.
After Ortho fires a beam at them he unsuccessfully tries to defend Ortho to Trein.
When the bullies continue to mock Ortho Deuce seems willing to take the situation into his own hands, but Ortho asks him to stand down so that they (and Idia) do not get into further trouble with Trein.
Later, Ortho gets his revenge by projecting embarrassing videos of the bullies in the middle of the school’s Main Street. When Trein appears Deuce supports Ortho’s claim of innocence and teases the bullies.
The Wish Upon a Star event takes place before Ortho has enrolled as an official student.
After Deuce learns that Ortho will be taking the students’ stars into space so that the event will not have to be canceled Deuce tells him, “You said you weren’t technically a student here, and that you and your brother were a package deal. But the way I see it? You’re the fourth Stargazer, no question.”
After Ortho has enrolled as an official student Deuce invites him to join himself and other first-year students in the cafeteria for lunch, telling Ortho that he is free to go to him if he has any problems in class.
When Ortho is considering joining a club Deuce invites him to the track-and-field team, but Ortho says he is more interested in new experiences than improving his performance.
Deuce invites Ortho (and Grim, the prefect and Epel) to his hometown for the White Rabbit Fes, but Ortho is unable to wear the costume that his mother prepares. Deuce takes Ortho to a blastcycle workshop nearby to borrow their 3D printer so that Ortho will be able to design himself new gear and participate with the rest of the group.
The workshop owner rejects Deuce’s request to borrow the printer, unable to trust him based on his poor past behavior, but Ortho goes to Deuce defense with, “Do you really think Deuce is just acting polite in order to make you drop your guard? I promise, Deuce is not smart enough to think of a plan like that, let alone pull it off!”
The owner concedes in order to not disappoint Ortho. Deuce asks Ortho to keep the secret of his past behavior from the rest of the group and Ortho agrees on the condition that Deuce helps him with his gear.
Ortho has a voice line of, “Deuce Spade claimed he is an honor student back at school. But this contradicts my memory banks.”
Ortho is possibly one of only six people at the school (Jamil, Silver, Grim, the prefect, Epel) who are aware of Deuce’s past issues.
Grim, Deuce, Ace, Ortho and the Prefect are the last people left to stand against Riddle in his dream of Book 7 and Deuce volunteers to use his unique magic, which will focus all the damage that he has accumulated through various battles with darkness all upon Riddle.
When Ace points out he won’t have enough time to aim and fire his spell before Riddle’s own UM cuts off his magic, Ortho volunteers to act as Deuce’s shield. Deuce explains, “I’m not good enough to skip the incantation for my signature spell yet. So we’ll have to take the time it takes to say it into account, too.”
