Deuce acknowledges the prefect more than most of the characters, telling them that he wants to hear their thoughts on Malleus’ singing during Glorious Masquerade and asking them to dance with him.
He asks them about the pictures they take, lets them know when one of their photos wins a contest and talks to them about still being in contact in the future after he has graduated and become a magic marshal.
When Malleus refers to Ramshackle as an “old abandoned house” Deuce murmurs to himself, “Abandoned? I feel bad for prefect…”
Deuce’s mother says that he has told her a lot about the prefect and Grim (Deuce: “No I haven’t”).
Deuce gives the prefect a tour of the White Rabbit festival at the prefect’s request, with Deuce letting the prefect choose their destination and leaving the others behind.
While walking around the festival together Deuce confides to the prefect that people gossiping about a troublemaker from the past were talking about him, and thanks the prefect for trying to cheer him up.
Deuce invokes the prefect to get Grim to cooperate during the drama of Glorious Masquerade, and asks them to take care of Grim and Trein.
Deuce says he would like to try making custard the way that Trey has taught him and, if it turns out okay, he’d love to share some with the prefect and Grim.
Sebek says that he once saw Deuce, Grim, Ace and the prefect “all lined up in the hall” and getting a lecture from Trein.
Deuce explains that the prefect had been called on to read a section from the textbook, but as Grim had drooled on it—making the text illegible—he had volunteered to read aloud instead to cover for them. But he had forgotten his own textbook.
Sebek asks why Deuce interjected himself into the situation at all and Deuce explains, “I can’t just leave my bud in a bind…prefect’s had my back through a lot.”
