Deuce and Prefect

Deuce acknowledges the prefect more than most of the characters, telling them that he wants to hear their thoughts on Malleus’ singing during Glorious Masquerade and asking them to dance with him.

He asks them about the pictures they take, lets them know when one of their photos wins a contest and talks to them about still being in contact in the future after he has graduated and become a magic marshal.

When Malleus refers to Ramshackle as an “old abandoned house” Deuce murmurs to himself, “Abandoned? I feel bad for prefect…”

Deuce’s mother says that he has told her a lot about the prefect and Grim (Deuce: “No I haven’t”).

Deuce gives the prefect a tour of the White Rabbit festival at the prefect’s request, with Deuce letting the prefect choose their destination and leaving the others behind.

While walking around the festival together Deuce confides to the prefect that people gossiping about a troublemaker from the past were talking about him, and thanks the prefect for trying to cheer him up.

Deuce invokes the prefect to get Grim to cooperate during the drama of Glorious Masquerade, and asks them to take care of Grim and Trein.

Deuce says he would like to try making custard the way that Trey has taught him and, if it turns out okay, he’d love to share some with the prefect and Grim.

Sebek says that he once saw Deuce, Grim, Ace and the prefect “all lined up in the hall” and getting a lecture from Trein.

Deuce explains that the prefect had been called on to read a section from the textbook, but as Grim had drooled on it—making the text illegible—he had volunteered to read aloud instead to cover for them. But he had forgotten his own textbook.

Sebek asks why Deuce interjected himself into the situation at all and Deuce explains, “I can’t just leave my bud in a bind…prefect’s had my back through a lot.”

Deuce offers to carry shopping bags that the prefect has in Book 1, encourages them to share his food during Vargas camp and mentions hearing about the Firelit Sky event from the prefect rather than from Cater or Trey.

Deuce offers the prefect and Grim a place to stay in Book 3, though it will require them sharing Deuce and Ace’s four-person room, and encourages them to reach out to him if they need anything during winter break in Book 4.

Neither Ace nor Deuce respond immediately when the prefect messages them for help after being trapped in Scarabia, but it is revealed that they actually both “came rushing back,” taking public transportation back to school during break to go to their rescue.

Deuce asks Cater to keep the prefect and Grim up-to-date about the Halloween Party during Terror is Trending.

Much like Book 4, the prefect calls Ace and Deuce when they are in trouble in Book 6. Deuce insists on going to the Grim’s rescue during the Charon attack, despite Ace’s efforts to get him to do as Vil instructed and stay back.

When Grim and the prefect return at the end of Book 6 there is an option where Deuce smacks both of them for running off (in the other option they get smacked by Ace).

Deuce scolds them with, “Do you have ANY IDEA what we’ve been through the past two days?!,” but he also says he is relieved that they are unhurt.

In a New Years voice line Deuce offered to help the prefect at Ramshackle as it “gets a lot of snow in winter.”

He apologizes to the prefect and Grim in Book 5 when he loses his temper at Ace.

During Spectral Soiree Deuce says that the prefect taught him that “Even if an enemy’s too strong to face alone, we can still beat them if we work together,” and shares this wisdom to calm a panicking Sebek.

At the end of Wish Upon a Star he says that he hopes the prefect will be able to use a wishing star for themselves next year, instead of just for Grim, and that their wish comes true.

After the events of Book 4 Deuce says, “I see you guys all the time, but it feels like it’s been years, for some reason.”

The prefect, Deuce and Grim pool their money together to buy a souvenir for Ace, and Deuce invites the prefect back to his hometown again after White Rabbit Fes (“I’ll try and be a better tour guide next time”).

In Deuce’s violent dream world of Book 7 he looks out for the prefect and Grim, saying, “You’re supposed to reach out to me or Ace when you head into non-Heartslabyul turf, remember?”

Deuce asks and receives permission from Dream-Riddle for the prefect and Grim to sit with Heartslabyul during lunch in order to protect them from hazing by other dorms.

When ordered to procure witnesses during a trial in Cater’s dream world the prefect and Grim are amongst the people whom Deuce selects (after Leona).

In Riddle’s dream Grim asks Deuce what his role will be in the final fight against Riddle and Deuce responds that, of course, Grim’s job is to protect the prefect.
