Deuce and Silver realize that they were both raised by single parents during the Wish Upon a Star event. Deuce apologizes for talking about himself when it is his job as a stargazer to listen to others and promises to hang Silver’s star “in a nice, secure spot on the big tree.”
After collecting Silver’s wish Silver shows Deuce around Diasomnia, interrupted by a phone call from Deuce’s mother. Deuce says that his old friends used to make fun of him for being close to her and Silver says, “It’s only natural you’d want to talk regularly with someone you care about.”
Deuce responds, “Nobody’s ever laid it out like that for me before. I couldn’t help but think what a stand-up guy you were when you made your wish, and now you’re proving me right!”
Deuce admits the issues he had in the past to Silver, making Silver one of maybe six people (including Epel, Grim, Jamil, the prefect and Ortho) who are aware of the mismatch between his pre-NRC and current self.
Silver assures him, “If you have a dream, just keep your eyes on the prize. Don’t let anything distract you,” and Deuce responds, “I’m glad I got to talk to you today. I’ll give it my best shot!”
When Deuce nearly gets into a fight with bullies in the courtyard he remembers Silver telling him that “fighting’s never good” and stops himself.
Silver sees Deuce chase the bullies away from the starsending ceremony without violence and commends him for his “masterful display of intimidation,” saying that he could learn from Deuce’s example.
(Deuce: “No one should do that! Please forget what you saw!”)
When called upon to procure witnesses for a trial during Cater’s dream, Deuce goes to Silver after Leona, Grim and the prefect. After seeing Silver chastise Sebek in Ace’s dream Deuce comments, “Silver might act nice, but he can be surprisingly harsh.”
When Silver asks Deuce to pick up an alarm clock for him from his hometown Deuce invites Silver to attend a local festival with him, instead.
Deuce repeatedly defers to Silver during the event for being an upperclassman, but by the end of the event Silver is insisting that Deuce is their leader.
Silver says that, if he had to choose anyone from NRC to be his sibling, he would choose Deuce: “He cares a lot about his mother. So l’d like a brother who treasures his family the way I do…And if Deuce were my brother, I think he could help me identify my own shortcomings.”
Deuce says, “Silver is so serene. Ordered to don a White Rabbit costume and he barely bats an eye. Maybe I should be more like him.”
