Deuce and Vil

Deuce and Vil overlap in a vignette where Deuce asks for help with bean sprouts that he planted in the botanical gardens for a class and Vil tells him to figure it out for himself, adding that he can “start with some encouraging words or the like.”

Deuce takes Vil’s suggestion seriously, surprising Ruggie (“I always knew you were weird, but DANG”).

Vil insults Deuce for believing him but then assures him that “While earnestness alone won’t carry you through life, it IS a virtue all the same.”

After Deuce decides to complain directly to Leona about Leona’s skipping out on his duties, however, Vil takes back his compliment: “You’re not earnest; you’re rash. It is not brave to challenge someone without a grasp of their capabilities. It’s reckless.”

He follows with, “you’re still a far sight better in my eyes than a scheming slacker like Leona.”

Deuce and Vil also overlap in a birthday vignette where Deuce volunteers to take a package from the school store to Pomefiore when Vil does not have enough time in his schedule to get it himself. In thanks, Vil invites Deuce to join his birthday party.

Deuce delivers the decisive hit to an overblotted Vil in Book 5 with his recently-learned unique magic, after which Vil compliments Deuce on the final blow that took him down.
