Deuce goes to Kalim and Jamil for help with his Starsending dance, where Jamil observes “just don’t subscribe to the notion that earnestness is inherently embarrassing” and Kalim says that Deuce reminds him of his little brothers.
When Deuce is struggling during Book 5 (“I’m neither book smart or a clever thinker. I don’t have much going for me at all, really…”) Kalim suggests that the problem is that Deuce keeps trying to use his brain, saying that Deuce reminds him of someone writing with their non-dominant hand while wondering why they are bad at writing.
Kalim empathizes, saying that he is also told that he is thoughtless and oblivious, but it means that all he needs to do to feel better is eat, rest and dance.
Kalim and Deuce also overlap during New Years, where they agree that they have “actually grown as people…like, a lot.”
Deuce possibly likes Crewel (and spends more time with him, due to remedial lessons and tutoring) than other students. When assigned a remedial lesson with Crewel he reacts with “I’d be happy to!.”
Deuce has a voice line that says, “If there’s anything you don’t understand, you should ask Professor Crewel. He’ll spend hours teaching you until you get it.”
Crewel takes over for looking after both Ace and Deuce during Book 6 after they get knocked unconscious during the fight with the Ferrymen.
During Fair Gala IF Crewel observes, “Pups grow right before our very eyes.It seems like they’ll be a handful forever, but then before you know it, they’ve grown into big, strong dogs. You can be sad about it. It’s just proof of how much you love them. There’s nothing strange or wrong about it.”
Deuce says, “Wow, Professor Crewel. I never knew you saw us that way…” and Crewel responds, “I do. But I think you could stand to do a little more growing, Spade. Especially academically.”
