Azul seems to have issues with food, perhaps stemming from his childhood.
Jade and Floyd seem aware of this, with Floyd commenting that “(Azul) only ever picks at his food these days,” and Jade teasing Azul about being able to put Ruggie’s ability to eat large quantities at once to shame if he felt so inclined.
Jamil notices that Azul eats very little during the Halloween party and accuses him of working on a scheme of some kind, and we see Azul expressing concern about exceeding his nutritional threshold and his daily caloric limit while commenting that he prefers having a well-defined figure.
While all of this has been accurately recreated in the English-language game, Azul confessing this insecurity to Riddle was not:
Original Azul: I regret it now extremely. Not studying properly, eating whatever I liked and lazing around…
EN Azul: I regret it now, believe me. I spent years just lounging around, doing whatever I felt like, and barely studying…
Original Azul: Wasting time while accumulating calories–the worst possible routine that went on for years!!!
EN Azul: Yes, it was an abysmal routine. I wasted time and gained precious little!
Original Azul: No matter how many hearts I have it will not be enough.
EN Azul: My heart can’t take any more of this.
(Octopi have three hearts! It is unconfirmed but rumored that this might have something to do with how Jade and Floyd both have “heart” in the names of their unique magics.)
Azul is infamous in the school for the amount of effort he puts into everything he does to the point that Rook’s nickname for him is “King of Effort,” and even Jack compliments him on his hard work.
Jade explains, “Azul will do anything to achieve his goals. In other words, he’s as hardworking as it gets.”
This makes a change to Jamil’s dialogue rather misleading:
Original Jamil: You really are clueless when it comes to flying. Completely different from lectures.
EN Jamil: For all the time you dedicate to our lectures, you put virtually none of that same effort into flying.
Original Azul: But I never imagined it would be under these particular circumstances. You have my gratitude.
EN Azul: But I never imagined it would be under these particular circumstances…
Original Azul: Of course! We’re getting along very well!
EN Azul: Of course! You might even call us best friends.
(The word “best friend” might be special in Twst: it has only been used by four characters in the game, and Azul is not one of them. ( More here -> ) The word Azul actually uses is the same one that Eric does, changed from the localization of “get along with” for Eric in the previous line to “best friends” for Azul.)
