Original Leona: He sounds just like my brother.
EN Leona: Talkin’ like he’s better than me.
In the original version of the game a significant part of Leona’s issues come from his family, but this was changed in the English adaptation of the game, while retained in the English-language manga.
Original Leona: …what do any of you know? Don’t lecture me like you’re my brother…
EN Leona: What do you know about how I feel?!
Falena is referenced a second time in Book 2 where Leona accuses Riddle of sounding like his brother directly before he overblots. This line was taken out of EN.
Original Leona: I’m a hated second-born prince who won’t ever be king!
EN Leona: I’m a secondborn prince who won’t ever be king!
An important point that is also emphasized in the manga and novel, it is possible that being secondborn itself might be less of an issue for Leona than the fact that he is hated for it back home, despite how it is not his fault and there is nothing he can do about it.
Original Leona: I know you’re there, frosh. It’s poor taste to stand and listen with ears as big as yours.
EN Leona: I know you’re there, frosh. No use hiding.
Original Leona: …get out of my sight, if you want to see the light of another day.
EN Leona: Get outta my sight.
Original Leona: After all, you’re not like me.
EN Leona: After all, I’m not like you.
Leona is not insulting Jamil in this sentence; he is encouraging him.
Several insults were added for the English-speaking audience, including this line from Fairy Gala where Leona calls the fairies “stupid.”
Original Leona: All right, all right. It seems Vil-sama can’t wait to hear what I have to say. Well, it’s not anything bad.
EN Leona: Fine, fine, if you’re so eager. And really, you should be.
Original Leona: It’s a relief I can just get to the point. The reason I invited you all is…
EN Leona: It’s nice bein’ surrounded by schemers. Makes things quicker. The reason I want you all with me is…
“Be prepared” is a verbal tic of Leona’s, which he repeats often. In his hometown event it was written as “be ready,” “I do hope you’re prepared” and “You were warned.”
The phrase is often removed or changed on EN, being directly translated as “Be Prepared” possibly only once (towards the end of Book 6) but in the original game it is usually the same phrase.
Leona’s wording is a direct reference to the Japanese-language version of the Lion King musical. While Scar uses different wording in the original animated movie, in the musical his line is identical to what Leona repeats so often in the original game.
The ghosts met during Spectral Soiree all had old-fashioned verbal tics, and in his attempts to convince the others that he is possessed by one of the ghosts in question, Malleus gets his verbal tics confused:
Malleus ends his sentence with “zo yo”, an outdated verbal tic that doesn’t really have a meaning in and of itself, like how all of Grim’s lines end with “zo”. The important part is that he is pretending to be possessed by a ghost with speech patterns of its own, who has thus far never used “zo yo”.
Leona discovers the ruse by noticing this mix up, since Malleus wouldn’t have such a problem if he were truly being possessed by a ghost with that specific speech pattern.
Leona points out Malleus’ speech patterns are inconsistent, compromising Malleus’ act.
An attempt was made by translators to uphold the old-fashioned speech patterns of the ghosts that we met throughout the game, but it maybe might have been confusing to try to convince EN players that Leona caught on to inconsistencies in Malleus’ efforts to speak like a ghost.
