Floyd’s Nickname Compilation, English vs Japanese

Ace: Kani-chan
Meaning: Crab-chan
EN: Crabby

Deuce: Saba-chan
Meaning: Mackeral-chan
EN: Macky

(EN will sometimes introduce a “y” or “ie” ending or the word “little” to Floyd’s names, possibly to represent the “-chan” honorific (ex: Ace, Deuce, Ortho) but sometimes not (ex: Jack, Epel, Sebek))

Riddle: Kingyo-chan
Meaning: Goldfish-chan
EN: Goldfishie / Lil’ Goldfish / Goldie

Cater: Hanadai-kun
Meaning: Seabream-kun
EN: Seabream

Trey: Umigame-kun
Meaning: Sea turtle-kun
EN: Sea Turtle

Leona: Todo-senpai
Meaning: Sea lion-senpai
EN: Sea Lion

(Floyd seems particular about to whom he grants the title of “senpai,” only using it for Leona, Vil, Idia and Malleus.)

Ruggie: Kobanzame-chan
Meaning: Remora/Sharksucker-chan
NA: Remora / Sharksucker

Jack: Uni-chan
Meaning: Sea urchin-chan
EN: Sea Urchin

(Floyd’s nickname for Ruggie remains the same in the original game, but on EN it is “remora” in one place and “sharksucker” in others, which seem to be two names for the same fish.)

Azul
We see in a flashback that child-Floyd referred to Azul as “Tako-chan” (Octopus-chan, “Octy” on EN-server) when they were still getting to know each other, but the game goes out of its way to have Floyd explains that he has no nickname for Azul now because, “Azul’s Azul.”

Kalim: Rakko-chan
Meaning: Sea otter-chan
EN: Sea Otter

Jamil: Umihebi-kun
Meaning: Sea snake-kun
EN: Sea Snake

There was an error during the 2026 New Year’s event on EN server where Kalim was referred to as “Sealie,” but that is his nickname for Grim, not Kalim. This error was unique to EN server and did not appear in the original game, where he was accurately referred to as “Rakko-chan.”

Vil: Betta-chan-senpai
Meaning: Betta-chan-senpai
EN: Lil’ Betta / Vil / Mr. Fancy Fins / Schoenheit / my fancy friend

Questions have been received before about whether or not Vil and Floyd have a unique relationship of some kind since—besides Azul and Jade—Vil is the only character Floyd refers to by names outside of his own sea-life-naming-convention, but he doesn’t. The EN-server exclusive changes to his dialogue that diverge from Betta-chan-senpai are non-canon.

Unlike Rook (who shifts between using French/Japanese/English with his nicknames and sometimes drops them completely), Floyd is strict about his names: he never uses any name with anyone besides the sea-creature name he decides for them, except for Azul and Jade. The game emphasizes this with Floyd’s “Azul’s Azul” line, so it is interesting that EN’s continuity for Floyd is so flexible.
