Grim, Food (pt3)

One of Grim’s more curious snacks are the black stones that are left behind after an overblot (he describes “black and shiny” caramels during Firelit Sky as looking (“pretty appetizin’ to me!”)

It seems that the stones all have different flavors that relate to the person who over blotted:

The stone from the monster in the prologue is described as, “full-bodied…like sweet, fragrant flowers burstin’ into bloom.”

Riddle’s stone: “rich and sweet, but with a complex hint of bitterness.”

Leona’s stone: “a real mature taste—slightly bitter yet tangy.”

Azul’s stone: “rich, with a briny punch like salted squid guts.”

Jamil’s stone: “spicy, but with a mellow, rich flavor.”

We do not get to hear a description of Vil’s stone as Grim is interrupted by the prefect and seemingly goes berserk at the thought of the stone being taken from him.

Crowley explains that he suspect the stones are condensed blot, and the “berserk” mode they triggered may actually be Grim’s true nature.

Grim is kidnapped by STYX soon after, with the memories of what he did but no idea why he did it.

The smell of what Grim associates with the stones sends him berserk again, and he is next seen riding Ortho’s shoulder as Ortho rises from the underworld.

Grim reacts to the prefect’s voice and seems to fall unconscious soon after. Vil explains, “Grim was in the Underworld far longer than any of us.” While Riddle and Vil suffered physical effects from being too close to Ortho and the Underworld for very brief periods of time, Grim appears unaffected.

Rook and the prefect save Grim from choking and Grim immediately apologizes, asking if he will still be able to go home to their dorm with the prefect.

Grim again becomes emotional during his reunion with Ace and Deuce.

Grim has a cryptic interaction with Crowley at the end of Book 6 where Grim declares that his tests at the hospital all turned out fine. Crowley responds, “I’m truly glad that you—ah, that is, ALL of you—made it back to the school safe and sound.” Crowley leaves immediately after confirming Grim’s health and Grim responds, “The headmage sure is a real weirdo.”
