Who plays what instruments at NRC?

Riddle Rosehearts

There is possibly no confirmation (as of this writing) of whether or not Riddle plays any instruments.

Trey Clover

Trey says,

“Arts and music are required at arcane academies to help bolster the students’ imaginations…but I’d never take those subjects if I had a choice. Being in a band is out of the question.”

Cater Diamond

Cater is both guitarist and vocals for the Pop Music Club.

Ace Trappola

There is possibly no confirmation (as of this writing) of whether or not Ace plays any instruments.

Deuce Spade

We learn in the White Rabbit event that children in Clock Town are taught how to play the bugle in middle school, but Deuce cannot, as he skipped so much class: “I thought all that flute playing and singing was silly…so I skipped out.”

Leona Kingscholar

There is possibly no confirmation (as of this writing) of whether or not Leona plays any instruments.

Ruggie Bucchi

Ruggie says, “I haven’t really played any instruments either. Even if I’d had the time to learn, I would’ve had to spend it finding ways to earn cash.”

Jack Howl

After he fails to play the flute Jack says, “I’ve never touched an instrument outside of class in my life,” so he might have a basic education in one or multiple unspecified instruments, but only what he has been taught in music classes at school?

Azul Ashengrotto

Azul: “I’m a rather adept pianist if I do say so myself.”

Jade Leech

Jade plays the bass and the flute.

Floyd Leech

We see Floyd play the flute, drums, ukulele and saxophone on screen, and Floyd explains, “I can pretty much play any brass band instrument,” and, “I’m kiiind of a musical genius.”

Floyd says that he, Jade and Azul participated in a music competition when they were younger but he was disqualified after he came up with his own “spin” on the music (“The audience loved it, but I got disqualified and Azul really let me have it”).

Floyd joins another music competition during Port Fest, saying that he is capable of playing all the instruments that they have on offer and ultimately choosing the saxophone.

After winning the competition Floyd is followed around by “a massive crowd” that begs him to play for them again and again, and his playing impresses both Malleus and Sebek.

When Kalim invites him to join the Pop Music Club, Floyd refuses: “I hate being told what to do.”

Floyd plays the drums during a performance at Scarabia but gets bored, throws his drumsticks away and begins to dance, instead.

Azul explains, “Floyd was famous for his drumming back home, you know. He beat out rhythms that would have everyone up and dancing. Except then he’d go and join them, ruining the entire thing.”

Jack says, “l can’t fault (Floyd’s) sense of rhythm. Wish I could steal it for myself.”

Kalim Al-Asim

Kalim says, “I only know how to play instruments from the Land of Scalding Sands. I’m particularly good at the darbuka,” and Lilia volunteers to teach him how to play the drums when they need a drummer for the Pop Music Club.

Kalim says he can also play “a stringed instrument called an oud,” and he has been good at playing instruments since he was little.

Kalim says:

I’m good at playing instruments, and the professor compliments my singing all the time.
Says I’ve got good range and that I’m good at staying on beat.

Azul mentions a music-class assignment where they were asked to “make water in a bucket dance in time with a piece of music” and Kalim says, “I got perfect marks for rhythm!”

Jamil Viper

There is possibly no confirmation (as of this writing) of whether or not Jamil plays any instruments.

Vil Schoenheit

There is possibly no confirmation (as of this writing) of whether or not Vil plays any instruments.

Rook Hunt

Ruggie says that he is surprised that Rook can’t play any instruments and Rook explains:

“I love few things more than beautiful art. I adore music, of course, and have attended many concerts. However, I have little interest in playing instruments myself.”

Rook says his failed attempt during Port Fest was his first time ever playing an instrument.

Epel Felmier

Epel says:

“I can play the concertina…probably ‘cuz I used to play ’em at parties since I was a kid. I can’t play anything complicated, but it’s fun jammin’ with everyone. Though most often I’d dance while the grown-ups played music. Or sometimes I’d clap along with the beat!”

Idia Shroud

Idia: “What’s the point of spending years learning an instrument when you can play a pro performance at the touch of a button?” During Harveston Idia feigns the ability to play the violin only to reveal that he had been playing a recording of violin playing the entire time. Due to artwork from this scene “Idia can play the violin” is a common misconception in EN fandom, but he actually cannot.

When Idia is assigned to playing the drums for the Star Sending Ortho says, “This should be a cinch since you’re such a whiz with music games.”

Idia reponds, “That doesn’t mean I can play real instruments,” but he does play drums for the performance at the end of the event

Ortho Shroud

Ortho: “I can help! You can leave synth and live programming to me!”

Malleus Draconia

We see Malleus play the pipe organ on screen, and he says that he is “a fair hand with stringed instruments.”

“Lilia instructed me in them back in Briar Valley. I wasn’t allowed to go outdoors much as a child, so l had to spend a lot of time in the castle, alone. That left me with ample time to hone my musical talents. Now I can play just about anything with strings. I would consider my specialty to be classical instruments—the violin, the cello, and so forth.”

Cater says he saw Malleus playing a “stringed instrument called a kamancheh.”

Malleus says he once attempted to use a mechanized violin when Lilia invited him to the Pop Music Club, but it did not go well:

“The result was an ear-splitting cacophony that made every student in the club faint. I still remember the way Diamond foamed at the mouth as he lay on the floor…”

Sebek boasts of Malleus’ talent on the cello, and we see him play a pipe organ during Spectral Soiree.

Lilia Vanrouge

Malleus says that Lilia taught him to play stringed instruments and Silver says Lilia taught him to play the ocarina so Lilia may be able to play them himself, but he has maybe yet to say so.

Lilia teaches Kalim how to play the drums and he plays the bass in the Pop Music Club. We also see him play a five-string bass during Spectral Soiree.

During the Cloudcalling event Lilia says, “They’re traditional Sunset Savanna instruments from the looks of it…Ooh! I’ve played this flute before, though it was a long time ago.”

Silver

Silver: “I can play the ocarina. My father taught me when I was a kid.”

Sebek Zigvolt

When asked if he can play instruments Sebek says, “I dabbled in a bit of violin playing once, out of admiration for my liege…” and this is possibly a reference to Harveston, where Sebek picks up a violin for the first time, saying, “I’ve listened to Malleus play a great deal, and I’ve always wanted to try it for myself.” This does not go well.

He says, “I’m presently preoccupied with my training, but I’ve considered following Malleus’s example and taking up an instrument of my own someday.”
