Malleus sends all of Sage’s Island to sleep in Book 7 so that they might enjoy “unending happiness,” and for Jack this seems to manifest as a dream world where Jack and the rest of Savanaclaw are training for the interdorm spelldrive tournament of Book 2, using their failure of the previous year as motivation to train extra hard rather than sabotaging the game to beat Malleus.
The characters discuss how it was Jack who revealed Savanaclaw’s ploy in the real world that injured so many people, which likely took a heavy mental toll on Jack.
Silver says, “Turning against the housewarden of your own dorm…not to mention someone you admire…considering Jack had only just started school at Night Raven, that must have taken a lot of determination for him…But in this dream, Jack never had any conflict with his housewarden.”
Grim suggests awaking Jack through violence but Idia cautions against it, as he is accompanied by dream-versions of Ruggie and Leona: as Jack greatly admires Leona and they are in a world where his wishes are being made manifest, it is likely that Jack’s admiration of Leona will make Leona even stronger in the dream than he is in reality.
Idia creates the plan for awakening Jack non-violently and weakening dream-Leona: forming a spelldrive team and challenging Savanaclaw to a practice game.
Ortho intercepts the disc during the match and Jack chases him into outer space. The logical fallacy combined with Ortho telling him to remember what happened before he fell asleep successfully awakens Jack.
Jack falls out of the sky, saved by Ortho, and dream-Leona lectures him for not being more careful, saying, “Every member of our team needs to be in top form on tournament day.”
Jack responds, “I wish you’d said that for real. But neither of you did. You were so obsessed with winning, you guys threw away what made you such a great team! I wanted so desperately to make you guys realize that. But I couldn’t do anything by myself. That’s why I…I…”
Dream-Leona and dream-Ruggie encourage Jack to stay asleep long enough to fulfill his dream of experiencing the interdorm spelldrive tournament, but Jack refuses, saying, “The upperclassmen I’ve got here would never pull any nasty tricks…but those upperclassmen don’t exist! The ones I looked up to, the ones I wanted to go all out…that wasn’t you guys! I don’t wanna fight alongside fakes. I’m gonna clear my own path!” and fighting the dark.
