Jade Leech’s Unique Magic

Jade says that he prefers not to reveal his unique magic, as “it is one that would make most people guarded around me if they knew what it did.”

Jade explains that his unique magic Shock the Heart (hidden meaning: the Tooth that Takes Out a Bite) ” forces a target to tell the truth.

Limitations: Jade describes his own unique magic as “very limited in scope,” saying, “It’s a spell that makes a target speak the truth, and it only works once,” and, “Once I use it on someone, I can never use it on them again.”

Azul says he has been trying to keep this ability of Jade’s a secret as his trump card, possibly for that reason.

It seems that Jade discovered this one-time only limitation by experimenting on Floyd, saying, “I’ve used it on Floyd before, but the second time and onward I cast it on him, it had no effect.”

When Sebek asks if he can make someone “blurt out things they didn’t want to share Jade responds, “Yes–if I can cast the spell on them with appropriate measures taken.”

Jade says that his unique magic tends not to work on mages more proficient than himself, and “it often doesn’t work at all on people highly resistant to magic, or wary types like Azul. It’s only effective on those with loosely guarded minds, or people in a moment of mental vulnerability.”

He further explains that “Shock the Heart” can vary in effectiveness with the target’s emotional state: “It’s necessary for me to apply pressure and rob them of the capacity for rational thought as much as possible.”

Jade might be capable of judging the effectiveness of his spell in advance, guessing that he has a fifty-fifty chance of success with Kalim before making the attempt in Book 4.

Jade says that Kalim has always been the type to open up to others, “Thus, my spell worked on him flawlessly,” but he still fails to extract the information he was looking for as the “truth” that he extracted was the fact that Kalim has promised never to reveal the answer to his question.

Azul observes that Jade’s unique magic was “thwarted by Kalim’s strength of character.” Having learned through Jade’s magic that it is “a promise (Kalim) keeps close to his heart,” they are able to successfully discover “the truth behind the unrest in Scarabia” in Book 4.

Conditions: Much like Jamil’s unique magic, Jade’s unique magic also seems to require eye contact, and specifically with his left eye.

In-Game Examples: We have seen Jade use Shock the Heart both on Kalim in Book 4 and on an unnamed Octavinelle student in Book 3. He also uses it on a darkness-version of himself in Azul’s dream in Book 7.

Jade also uses his Shock the Heart during the Nightmare Before Christmas event where Riddle describes it as a spell that “makes anyone speak the truth just once,” and “quite insidious.”

Side Effects: Shock the Heart seems to result in mild confusion by the target immediately afterwards, with Kalim seemingly having forgotten what it was that he said. The unnamed Octavinelle student seems to be aware of what it was he said under the effects of Jade’s magic, so this effect may vary by person.

After being released from Jade’s magic during the Nightmare Before Christmas event the target responds, “Huh? What was I doing again?”

Unlike Jamil’s unique magic, which causes its target pain until they are willing to submit to him, Jade describes his unique magic as painless.

It is possible that we have yet to see Jade dismiss his unique magic on-screen, though he does say “all right” in Book 4 directly before Kalim is released from the spell, which was possibly Jade cutting the spell off.

This is another contrast to Jamil’s unique magic: it has appeared to wear off without his dismissing it at least once (or perhaps it was dismissed off screen), while in Book 6 Jamil cuts off the spell on his own. There is a possibility that the effects of Jamil’s unique magic last longer than Jade’s, but this is as of yet unconfirmed.
