Jade is not the most polite person, oftening saying rude things, but the way he says them is always using polite speech, to the point that he was voted #1 in 2024 and #2 in both 2023 and 2025 on rankings of “What Character Comes to Mind When You Think of Keigo?” (voted #4 in 2022)
The rankings include commentary such as:
(Jade’s) appeal lies in his mysterious nature. Fans say things like “I love the unsettling feeling that comes from how he always uses polite speech, yet somehow sounds like there’s something hidden beneath it,” and “His manner is gentle, but the way he casually delivers sharp remarks or insults is irresistible.”
Another part of his charm is that “he’s always smiling and speaking politely, and because his twin brother Floyd Leech is so free-spirited and unpredictable, Jade’s ‘polite-speaking character’ stands out even more.”
His demeanor is gentle, but in truth he’s sharp-tongued. That hint of sadism that seeps through behind his careful, polite wording is irresistible…!
We see Jade speaking politely in both child- age and middle-school-age flashbacks, possibly insinuating that his speech patterns are not something he adapted recently but rather how he has always spoken, and was possibly raised to speak.
It was revealed back in 2020 that the twins’ mother refers to them both with the “-san” honorific, and commenters on Twstsoku were theorizing from at least 2022 that his speech patterns might come from her, being learned rather than calculated:
I think Jade’s mother was probably a polite-speech type too, so he grew up hearing it and, since it fits his personality, it became natural. And he likes observing people’s reactions, so polite speech might make other people’s responses to fun things more entertaining for him.
Twstsoku commenters also go into depth on the similarity of Jade and Azul’s speech patterns:
In Azul’s case his polite-speech feels like it’s something calculated, for things like not showing his true feelings or gaining an advantage in business, so it feels like his true self is different, whereas Jade’s case feels like his base self is completely a polite-speech character. Jade’s polite speech suits his own temperament seems like something he’s picked up.
Polite speech can be used both to keep distance from people and to enter into someone’s personal space. I’ve always thought that Jade’s polite speech is to maintain distance from others. He loves observing mushrooms, people, anything, so he probably values keeping the proper sense of distance. No matter how close he seems to someone, there’s still a sense of distance when he speaks politely. If he gets too close, he might not be able to observe properly, so I imagine he keeps a boundary.
In videos from 2021, a creator put together compilations of the ruder things that we have seen Jade say while using perfectly polite forms of speech, ranked by degree of sarcasm, degree of nastiness, and degree of annoyance(expressed by the person he is addressing):
・【Twisted Wonderland Compilation】 5 Examples of Jade’s “Snide Remarks” / Remake Version [Text Commentary] (YouTube link)
・【Twisted Wonderland Compilation】 4 Examples of Jade’s “Snide Remarks” (Halloween Jade) [Scary Monsters, Chapter 1 – Part 1] (YouTube link)
But not all of these examples are reaching the English-language server (which is known to rewrite dialogue to make the characters sound more polite than they actually are, more here ▶︎):
Example: After Epel’s grandmother, Marja, adopts her speech patterns to speak without her dialect to the visiting students Jade responds, “Oh, so you do speak the same language as us.”
On EN this was rewritten as, “Oh, you’ve adjusted your accent for us. That’s very welcoming of you.”
And there is more to Jade than just the use of polite speech: he will also integrate more casual forms into what he says, such as “da” (more here ▶︎), also picked up by Twstsoku commenters:
I like how Jade speaks in polite language but ends his sentences with ‘~da.’ I wonder if anyone can understand this feeling. Depending on the context, these are sentences where ‘~desu (ne)’ would work just fine, but the fact that he uses ‘~da’ instead is somehow really nice.
When that occasional ‘~da.’ tone comes out, I imagine that Jade’s polite speech isn’t about respecting the other person. Rather, his polite way of speaking and gentle manner are probably ingrained in his body. I’m imagining this and quietly fangirling on my own. It seems like it might be inherited from his mother. It might be a different point from the OP, but I really like it.
Since he’s usually always speaking politely, when he suddenly says “da,” it makes my heart race.
I understood this so well that I nodded. His polite speech will break down but it still has elegance, and at the same time it’s like a small gap, or showing a glimpse of friendliness. It’s like the temptation of a moray eel.
During the Eternity Float event, we learn that this is something Georgina does as well.
In summary: Jade is one of the less polite characters while simultaneously speaking most politely, with his use of polite speech is possibly being less about being polite at all and more so just a part of who he is.
With occasional hints and variations that might be insinuating that polite speech is not something that he has adopted but just his default mode of being, or possibly being used to keep distance between himself and those whom he wishes to observe?
And it is possibly how he was raised to speak, and may have been learned from his mother, specifically? (As we have not met the twins’ father we cannot know for sure.)
