Jamil’s Friend

Note: The word Jamil typically uses for friend is 友達 (tomodachi), which can be either plural or singular. In Firelit Sky Najma reveals that Jamil has one specific friend from middle school with whom they would go to the Camel Bazaar, meaning it is possible that every single time Jamil referred to his “middle school tomodachi” he meant to one person in particular rather than a friend group.

Friend, singular, has been specified in clubwear and Bloom Birthday voice lines but usually it is left vague. The English language has forced localizers to choose multiple or singular due to the limitations of the English language, and the English-language version of Twst shifts between both. Screenshots below have been rewritten to specify “friend(s)” to give EN speakers something closer to the experience of the original game.

During the Firelit Sky event Najma tells Jamil, “You never mention anyone when you come home, so I get worried sometimes,” but Jamil corrects her, saying that they are not friends, they are just a group of upperclassmen and underclassmen from school. Najma seems unconvinced, saying, “Uh-huh. Whatever you say,” but when the group refuses to take a photo with a melon that is “supposed to make friendships last forever” she is surprised, asking?”

Jamil responds, “Not at all. That’s just how we are.” (Najma: “Night Raven College must be one weird school…”)

Later in the event Trey asks Jamil if he does a lot of shopping in the area and Jamil responds, “Back in middle school, my friend(s) and I used to drop by the Camel Bazaar a lot…and, well, you can fill in the blanks.” (Trey: “Lemme guess: you swiped food?” – Jamil: “Rgh…”)

Trey says, “It sounds like you had a lot of fun back then” and Jamil replies, “I’d say so. Middle school was the first point in my life where I had some time and space to myself. I had (a) friend(s) I could talk with about anything. We’d study together, practice dancing, go out in town and get into trouble…It was also the first time I got into a really bad fight with a friend(s). We went days without talking, all because of the stupidest thing…”

In a birthday vignette Jamil again mentions his “middle school friend(s),” saying, “We’d eat all sorts of street food and try our hands at bartering.”

When Kalim tells Jamil that Noble Bell College social will be “a chance to make friends from other schools” Jamil responds, I doubt one single social would be enough to form any meaningful friendships…” and he tells Azul in Book 4, “I can see I made the right call not making friends with you” and “I will be perfectly content never being friends with you.”

On the subject of his one confirmed friend from middle school Jamil says that they would naturally try to eat any snacks that he happened to have, and he has a voice line of, “I used to play basketball with my friend during breaks back in middle school. Good times…”
