Kalim, the Housewarden Role, Halloween

Kalim might not know that he became Housewarden of Scarabia because of nepotism (the previous Housewarden was an Asim family relative).

Kalim has mentioned more than once that he was surprised to be selected, even saying that Jamil is more capable.

Kalim says that he is “not sure what all a housewarden does”, Jamil says that he is “too easygoing” and Riddle says that Kalim and Leona are good examples of how “maybe sons of wealthy families are ill-suited to being housewardens” (in a line that was removed from EN) after Kalim explains, “Whenever I yawn in Scarabia, Jamil prepares my bed for me!”

Kalim’s dorm mates, however, seem fond of him, saying that he is “a broadminded, kindhearted soul” and that they all looked up to him (before the drama of Book 4). They share experiences of Kalim looking out for them, such as when he would listen to their troubles and made it fun to be a Scarabia student.

Halloween involves Kalim dressing as a werewolf and attempting to scare people in what is described by the other students as a heartwarming, kid-friendly display that one might hear in a petting zoo, despite his sincere attempts to be scary.

Kalim stops Jamil from burning down the school store to wipe out an invasion of insects, and the only issue he seems to have with the Magicam Monsters is that their antics put Jamil in a sour mood. (Kalim might not take Jamil’s insect-phobia very seriously teasing Jamil about a bug in the lecture hall during a Chat.)

When his dorm mates beg Kalim to punish the Magicam Monsters he agrees to “give them a firm warning”, and Jamil expresses doubt in Kalim’s ability to do what is required of him, saying “He’s the kind of guard dog that would sooner trot up to a burglar and wag his tail than actually do any guarding.”

Kalim gives his usual “Rawr!” to scare off the Magicam Monsters and then we see his eyes take on the red glow that reveals when he has been overtaken by Jamil after which the visitors and Scarabia students all become legitimately frightened. Kalim wakes up and cannot remember what happened, saying he had been ready to take photos with the visitors to show that there were no hard feelings.

Jamil compliments him on his performance and we learn that he received training from Rook in how to act like a proper wolf. Jamil says, “Formulating a plan with an eye towards the end result and working unstintingly to achieve it…you were a credit to your position as Housewarden, Kalim.”

During Spectral Soiree Kalim is possessed by a ghost who slaps Jamil’s hand away and tells him to mind his station, becoming violent much quicker than the other possessed students. The ghost abandons Kalim in disgust at how lax the owner of the body is.
