Jamil is suspicious of the conditions under which Kalim transferred to NRC and seems to think money may have been a factor behind his admittance (not yet confirmed).
Ruggie says Kalim is from “one of the richest families in the world”, and Leona says that “the wealthy families of the Scalding Sands are way richer than royalty in other lands. If you wanna butter someone up Kalim’s your best bet, not me.”
During Book 6 Leona points out that there is no contest between Jamil and Kalim based on intelligence or magic as Kalim is “not very bright or that adept with magic,” but Kalim has charisma that Jamil lacks in the form of his money. “Money’s more tangible than magic. It commands a lot of power and has no uncertain or ambiguous factors…and Kalim is learning how to wield that power.”
Leona explains that, “it’s hard to predict how impulsive guys like Kalim will grow…for better for for worse.”
There is a “storeroom” of treasure and gold in Scarabia Dorm that Kalim refers to as “stuff” his father sent with him when he left for school.
In addition to asking the prefect if they’re sure they don’t want to buy a new set of PE clothes after theirs becomes dirty, Kalim mentions going to a concert hosted at a hotel owned by his father, that his parents “rented out a few movie theaters” in order to watch the VDC competition in Book 5 and that he plays board games with diamonds back home.
There is also a reference to Kalim’s parents buying a mountain when he said he wanted to try camping, expensive fabric that he has in storage at the school (Jamil says that a single bolt of the fabric costs enough to “easily feed, house and clothe a family of four for a month”) and an antique Albert chain he lends to Lilia that “is easily worth 10 million thaumarks”.
Ruggie says throwing “money and bodies at problems to make them go away” is “classic Kalim”, and this seems to be the case: when he orders 100 kumade on accident during New Years his first reaction is to buy them all himself in order to correct the problem, and he bemoans the dorms’ set Halloween budgets, saying he wanted to “spend (his) own money to go bigger and fancier with (his) dorm’s stuff” but he was refused.
Early on Kalim says that when he first enrolled in NRC his father “donated a bit to the school to give the place a fresh coat of pain”, but during Firelit Sky it is revealed that his father hired an architect to renovate the entire dorm, which is why Scarabia is is so similar in aesthetic to Kalim’s own house.
Grim says Kalim’s home itself is “less of a ‘house’ and more like a theme park castle”, and Jamil says that tour buses drive by it making it a literal tourist attraction. Jamil says that locals refer to it as “Asim Palace.”
When the Firelit Sky group arrives, Kalim’s father arranges for a 15-meter-long, custom-made car equipped with refrigerators and massage chairs to pick them up, and Kalim explains that his parents have multiple cars and each license plate number is the birthdate of one of his many siblings. Kalim says that there is one car for each of their children.
Kalim has around 30 or 40 brothers and sisters (information that was removed from EN).
