Kalim enrolled at NRC two months into the school year and might not have been selected by the Dark Mirror at all: he explains that, a month after Jamil left home, he suddenly received a letter of acceptance that was followed by the black carriage.
He says that he forgets “if it was an oversight in selection or some special exception or what”, implying that there may have been an explanation at the time, but we never learn what it was. Deuce asks if the nature of Kalim’s soul was just recognized by the Dark Mirror belatedly but Jamil expresses doubt that that is how NRC’s students are selected at all: we see in a flashback that, when Kalim was appointed Housewarden, Jamil went to the headmage to plead with him to step in.
Crowley said that “providing education comes with costs. And our young friend’s family has been quite generous in their support. It applies me in a position where I must make certain…compromises.”
Jamil suspects that Crowley probably arranged for a backdoor admission to NRC for “generous Asim family donations.”
Kalim says that he was kidnapped as a kid more times than he can count on two hands, but there hasn’t been a single attempt on his life since he enrolled at NRC.
This is referenced in Firelit Sky where Cater refrains from posting to Magicam in real time, saying, “I’d hate to wind up on Jamil’s bad side if Kalim got kidnapped because of info I posted.”
When Vil asks Kalim what he uses for hair and skin care Kalim says that his attendants back home always slathered him in moisturizers, but he hasn’t done anything of the sort since coming to NRC.
Silver describes Kalim as “always so cheerful and kind and fun-loving” and “a dear friend.” The two make plans to help one another during Beanfest with Kalim telling Silver he will be certain to wake him up if Silver starts to fall asleep.
When Kalim and Silver are suspicious of Rook’s willingness to give them advice despite being on the opposite team, Rook says that he merely wants “to have a most delightful Beanfest, with all of you!” Ortho reacts with surprise to how easily Silver and Kalim accept this explanation.
For their mutual obliviousness Ruggie has dubbed Kalim and Silver what is called “the Facepalm Brigade” on EN, which JP calls “ira-fuwa”: A combination of the word “irritating” (ira-ira) and “fluffy” (fuwa-fuwa) to describe how they can annoy people with their cluelessness. Silver also helps supply Kalim with birds for a last-minute parade at Scarabia dorm.
