Kalim seems to have a lot of confidence. When asked about his time on a sprint in PE class Kalim responds, “I can’t remember, but I’ll bet it’s faster than yours’ll be!”, says he is an “excellent judge of character” and tells Jamil, “I did great, didn’t I?”, after Jamil saves him from injury when he falls into a fountain.
He tells Lilia and Cater that obviously he wants to be the lead singer of the pop music club as he knows he is the most talented vocalist, since “Whenever I sing everyone—Jamil, my parents, siblings, you name it—showers me with compliments!” He then asks that they decide the best singer through a dance-off as he is “actually better at dancing than singing”, but he might not be the best dancer:
Despite studying dance since he was a child Vil says he makes “a lot of basic errors”. When Kalim insists that his and Jamil’s dancing was “super cool” Vil corrects him with, “Kalim, you haven’t gotten through the entire dance without a misstep once. Not ONCE.”
Afterwards Vil explains that while he could tell Kalim was enjoying it, “Your attention to detail was a bit lacking, but Jamil covered for you in spades,” so it is unclear how much of the dance he excelled at by the end. Kalim does get selected for the VDC team in Book 5, but as a backup member alongside Ace and Deuce, neither of whom have been dancing from childhood like Kalim.
It seems Kalim’s consistent problem is his body going into “dance mode all on its own!”
Ultimately Cater becomes the lead singer of the Pop Music Club and Kalim becomes the drummer after assuring Lilia that he is particularly good at the darbuka.
Jamil is made a lead member of the VDC team in Book 5 and it is revealed in the Firelit Sky event that, as a child, Jamil would practice dancing in (what he believed was) private on his breaks from serving the Asim family.
Jamil learns that his breaks would get cut short because Kalim would abuse his privilege as heir of the estate to check security cameras and hunt him down.
Kalim is often referencing dance, offering to teach Ortho and explaining that Ortho shouldn’t use information he has downloaded to learn as “slowly getting better through practice is part of the fun”.ht
