When the group of Book 2 is caught at Savanaclaw in the novel, Leona seems uninterested until he notices Cater:
“Ruggie is all courtesy, offering the group as tribute, but the recipient of his gift seems wholly uninterested in such prey. With a look of complete indifference, Leona tilts his head to one side. Then he raises one eyebrow, broken by a scar that extends over his eye. ‘Cater. What are you doing here.’”
It is also insinuated that Leona may have injured Cater intentionally during the novel’s practice match:
“‘Ah…!’ Cater presses a hand against the side of his head. Yuuya squints, seeing a red mark on Cater’s hand. It seems that the disc grazed him, cutting his ear. Yuuya’s throat tightens, and Ruggie effortlessly catches the flying disc. ‘Shishishi. That’s our Leona-san. Nice pass.’”
While never stated outright it is possibly Cater who gave Trey and the other injured athletes the idea to ask that Savanaclaw not be disqualified from the spelldrive tournament, turning Leona’s words from the “practice” match back on him at the end of Book 2.
During Cater’s dream Leona and Idia guess that Trey and Cater had possibly been intending upon using Riddle behind the scenes after he took over as housewarden. Deuce insists they are both “caring and sincere” (“At least…I think they are…”), and Leona responds that as 3rd-year NRC students who survived Heartslabyul at its worst, “They’ve gotta be clever and calculating.”
Cater is not pleased by Leona and Idia giving such ideas to Deuce, saying that he and Trey are not “the kind of nefarious schemers that would take advantage of younger students.” Leona is unconvinced.
Leona is impressed by Cater’s ability to adapt on the spot to the situation in Ace’s dream (Cater: “Sorry for being a quicker thinker than you imagined”).
When Ortho and the other students decide to interfere with Cater’s attempts to awaken Ace in order to protect them Leona who refuses to allow it (“Let’s see what Heartslabyul’s number-three guy can do”).
Cater chooses Leona as one of the people to join him in infiltrating Trey’s dream, saying that Leona is “way more dependable” than himself in a fight (Leona: “Tch, you liar. What a hassle…”)
Leona and Cater overlap in Cater’s fifth birthday vignette where Cater fails to get Leona to wish him “Happy Birthday” a day in advance, saying that he will consider himself lucky for Leona being willing to have a conversation with him at all instead of just ignoring him.
Coming upon Leona by coincidence the following day, Cater succeeds in goading Leona into telling him “Happy Birthday.”
