Leona and Compliments

Leona is the target of more mockery than maybe any other character, which is maybe why he seems more adept at handling insults than he is compliments: when he is complimented by others he will downplay himself, such as when Vil and Lilia compliment his driving skills, when Skully compliments his leadership (“I just dumped all the hassles on other people”) and when Ruggie and Jack and Ruggie try to call him their king (“Must be an awfully cheap crown”).

When Jade describes Leona as “a rather formidable Spelldrive player and an equally capable mage” Leona responds, “You’re giving me way too much credit. Even if (Floyd and I) did go head-to-head, I doubt I’d live up to his expectations,” and Jade responds, “Such modesty.”

When a darkness-Ace of Riddle’s dream says, “You’ve got a super powerful signature spell, and you can block our housewarden’s signature spell,” Leona responds, “That was more of a fluke.”

When Jack credits Leona for giving him the advice that inspired him to create a successful show at Port Fest Leona responds, “I didn’t do nothin’.”

Leona receives far more insults than he does compliments: When Jamil asks if he and Sally are talking about the same person when she describes Leona as “a well-mannered young gentleman” Riddle responds, “That’s an acerbic remark… Though I can sympathize with the sentiment.”

Riddle tells Kalim that both he and Leona might be unsuited to being housewardens due to being the sons of wealthy families.

When Idia is possessed by a ghost that has him acting like Leona Ace says, “If we don’t do something, we’ll have to deal with TWO insufferably smug tough-guy types!,” and during the same event says it is “typical” for Leona to skip out on work: “Aren’t you supposed to be a housewarden? How about showin’ some leadership?”

We have seen two different instances now of Leona being surprised by how others view him: once during Spectral Soiree in response to the possessed Idia (“Do I really come off like that?”) and once during Playfulland, when Jack imitates him by saying, “What a pain. This stinks. I don’t wanna. I’m takin’ a nap.” (Leona: “Is that seriously what you think I sound like?”)
