Leona and Rook

Grim has a voice line of, “Wonder why Leona gets so irked by Rook. If Rook’s got somethin’ on Leona… I wanna know it too!”

Leona will refer to Rook as a “weirdo” and “creepy,” and we get an idea maybe of why in a vignette where we see Rook hiding behind a pillar to watch Leona in the school’s courtyard (Rook: “If those sharp fangs of his pierced my windpipe, why, l’d be done for in an instant. The very notion makes my heart quiver”).

Even after Rook goes to class he continues to watch Leona from a window, saying that he “could watch Leona all day and never tire of it,” and commenting on how he wishes he had a bow and arrow on hand: “If a hunter attacked, it would take (Leona) longer than necessary to spring away to safety.”

Vil is not impressed as Rook explains, “I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get my hunter’s blood boiling every time I look at him,” and “I so ache to corner that calm, collected quarry just enough to make him bare his fangs. Oh, to find myself in the position to make him squirm!”

Rook approaches Leona directly in the cafeteria, inviting himself to sit at Leona’s table and revealing that he was able to coerce Ruggie into betraying to him the fact that Leona does not like vegetables.

Rook says, “I’m glad I got to see you eating, Leona. Mid-meal is when creatures are the second-most vulnerable, right after sleeping” and invites Leona out to dinner (“What would you say to dinner on opposite sides of the table some other time, then? That way I could see you from the front”), and Leona changes seats.

Rook observes, “It’s rather cute the way his tail thrashes about when he’s irate. Indeed, the stronger the prey, the more I am driven to ensnare it. That’s the hunter in me talking, I suppose.”

After Grim and Leona run physically into one another, spilling a potion that Rook had helped Epel create, Leona says he doesn’t see how they were able to learn anything “from the gibberish that jerk spouts.”

Epel insists that “Rook happens to be a potionology expert,” but Leona is able to remake the potion Rook described as exceptionally difficult within a few minutes while Epel tells him that they should give up.

Epel urges Leona to teach him how he did it and Leona responds, “The only reason I helped you was to get outta dealing with that hunter pest, and now I got a buncha other pests on my back?”

Leona is also not pleased to learn that Jack went to Rook for advice during Port Fest.

Neither Rook nor Malleus attend Rook’s birthday party despite being invited, and Rook tells a story from the previous year’s Beanfest where they caught Rook between them and managed to take him down despite quarreling with one another at the time.

One of Leona’s issues with Rook may be the way that Rook seems to ignore what people say, which Leona complains about to Rook at least twice and is the same issue that he seems to have with Silver and Cheka.

Rook has repeatedly been proven to value his privacy, refusing to tell Epel, Sebek, Deuce or Trey about his family, to the point that Trey lies about seeing a ghost during Spectral Soiree in order to keep Sebek from questioning Rook, as he has noticed that Rook tends to avoid talking about his private life in club meetings.

When Leona refuses to press Rook for details during a birthday interview, however, Rook acts very differently, saying,

“I am of course eager to join the party and see everyone, but the time I’m spending with you is equally as precious. So do not worry about the time. By all means, probe me for more details!…I’d be happy with any question you deem appropriate, Leona! Go on —ask me whatever you like.”
