Idia says Leona is “a real pro at getting out of stuff he doesn’t wanna do,” and we see this as early as the prologue when Leona refuses to join in the chase for Grim, saying that Crowley is surely capable of handling things himself.
This is also a focus of a vignette where Leona convinces Vil to fix a loose button on his vest merely by refusing to do so himself.
Leona’s solution for Fairy Gala IF is to “dump the job” on first-year students, which they do. Leona refuses to go after a rare lanternblossom during Vargas Camp due to it being on a cliff face, telling his team members that there are “less exhausting” ways to find one, but as Riddle’s group found the cliffside flower first it is also possible that this was an excuse to keep his team members from stealing it without revealing such charitable intent.
Leona attempts to take a break from his Vargas Camp tasks which results in him being forced to do “nonstop squats under a ghost’s supervision.”
When Ruggie points out that Leona will be left in charge of cleaning up the camp with him gone Leona changes his mind about not going to the mine in search of Deuce. (Ace: “You were just trying to decide which task would be more work, weren’t you?!”)
Leona is assigned the task of watering the botanical gardens when the caretaker goes on leave due to having skipped too many classes, which he also skips out on doing.
The catalyst of the Cloudcalling event is Leona not wanting to give “guardian lessons” to the winner of a local tournament. Instead he trains the group of Vil, Kalim and Lilia, saying, “We can pretend I did the lessons and no one will be the wiser, as long as we get our stories straight.”
Leona also refuses to allow Jack to invite others to Playfulland due to the risk of Ruggie causing problems for him, saying, “I’m willing to overlook a little on-campus mischief…but off-campus? That changes things.” (Jack: “You sweep things under the rug on campus…?”)
Leona attempts to cut corners repeatedly during his Master Chef course, beginning with having Epel fetch the ingredients he needs from the refrigerator (Epel: “That’s pretty normal for Leona”).
He also tries to avoid having to put the skin of a vanilla bean in his cooking pot (Chef: “You just want to save yourself the trouble of having to fish it out of the pot later”) and to make sauce for his panna cotta (Chef: “You can’t just cut out steps!”).
Leona’s penchant for avoiding work was possibly a major factor in why the lantern event group was able to complete their tasks by the deadline: they had been completing each and every task to its fullest until Leona tells them, “ As long as you attempt it in one way or another, that’s enough,” earning approval from both Riddle and Jack.
After Riddle is summoned to Idia’s room in Book 7 in the lead-up to the final fight against Malleus, he tells Idia he already knows that the dream he had been in was created by Malleus, as he was informed in advance by Leona.
Idia responds, “Props to Leona! Way to save a ton of trouble. Of course a guy who loves ditching work but still acts capable would be a pro at that!,” but Riddle describes Idia as someone capable of “incredible feats” who is “devoid of motivation most of the time,” a very similar complaint to what people tend to say about Leona (more here ▶︎).
Leona refuses to focus on anyone outside of his own group during Spectral Soiree (Floyd: “I bet the other guys are thinkin’ the same thing”), and his argument for Jack staying away from Playfulland is, “Who’s gonna be on the hook if things go south? The housewardens-including yours truly. Go back to school and stop making extra work for me.”
After Jack is assigned to tsum-sitting by Crowley, Leona tells him, In the future, when someone tries to dump a chore on you, don’t let ’em. Make a big stink ’til they give up. Is that clear?” – Jack: “Yessir!”
