Leona: Perceptive (pt1)

In addition to being exceptionally intelligent, Leona is also shown to be particularly perceptive, with Skully complimenting him for having “a keen eye” for those around him.

In Book 7 Leona seems to instantly recognize the surreal nature of Deuce’s dream despite how it is his first time visiting a dream outside of his own: he adapts and adlibs accordingly, surprising Sebek, who had been in several dreams by that point in the story but apparently did not notice anything unusual.

It is also Leona who realizes why the books of Deuce’s dream are blank, accurately explaining that his imagination cannot fill in the content of books he has not read, despite how he had never been in another person’s dream before and had none of the rest of the groups experience with Malleus’ dream realms.

When Ruggie helps Lucius reunite with Trein, Leona accurately assumes that Ruggie had been plotting something when Ruggie does not ask for anything in return.

In an early vignette Leona notices that Jamil is having unpleasant thoughts about him based on the expression on Jamil’s face, and also assumes that Kalim is in danger from Jamil, despite Jamil’s claim that “not once has (his) mind wandered to such heinous deeds,” with Leona being proven right in Book 4.

In Book 6 Leona seems to be the only character suspicious of the “top secret” organization that is STYX depending on NDAs, connecting this to the rumor that “No mages have ever returned once they were taken to the Island of Woe,” and Idia later reveals that “everyone who’s had a run-in with STYX” gets their memories erased: no one can say they returned from the Island of Woe if they have no memory of going in the first place.

Out of the group of Vil, Azul, Jamil and Riddle, Leona is the only person who remains self aware during the simulations and STYX, accurately identifying a fake-Ruggie as a projection composed from his own memories, predicting what the projection was about to do and for what purpose.

It is Leona who makes the connection of the missing test subject at STYX being Grim, and he is suspicious of Idia’s and Ortho’s indirect approach during the group’s descent into Tartarus, realizing that the most they could do at the time was agitate the Phantoms.

Despite how the two characters were not particularly close at the time Leona identifies Jamil’s silent conviction that he is better than others (which Jamil himself silently admits is correct) and proceeds to provide Jamil with evaluations of Riddle’s, Azul’s, Ruggie’s, and Jack’s strengths and weaknesses.

Leona also notices when Jamil gets injured in Book 6 despite his attempts to hide it, and is the only member of the Cloudcalling group who realizing that Vil gets injured in round 1 of the tournament (Vil: “…If you were able to see through me, then I dare say I need to improve my acting skills”).

Leona also points out that, despite a “very nice-sounding excuse,” Vil is sincerely drawn to Playfulland by the promise of stage performance (Vil: “Excuse me, that’s not true! I simply… Well, I suppose l’d be lying if I said I WASN’T interested in it…”).

Leona is suspicious of Fellow before they have even met, telling Jack, it is “obviously shady” that he “just lucked” his way into received such valuable tickets and is “signing up for nothing but trouble,” which proves correct.

Leona comments on the creepiness of the theme park’s puppets early on and seems to sense something is off with himself during the day: when Jack teases Leona about his willingness to participate in rides (under the influence of Fellow’s UM), Leona responds, “It’s not like that… Wait, maybe it is…?”

At the end of their day at the park Ace comments on how quiet things have become and it is Leona who seems to sense the danger they are in, urging everyone to leave the park as soon as possible. After Jade, Lilia, Grim and the prefect are captured it is Leona who makes the connection that Fellow cannot turn people into puppets at will, setting a strategy of being “nice and cautious.”

Leona also provides an evaluation of the puppets that pursue them, noting that they do not have much magic, strength or speed, and they can only make simply movements, with their strength being in their sheer numbers.

After he is captured Leona agrees with Fellow’s opinion on the uselessness of school, changing his opinion after realizing through nothing but eye contact with Lilia that they have an opportunity to trick Fellow into releasing them (Trey: “And I had such high hopes it was gonna work with Leona playing along and everything, too…” – Jack: “No wonder Leona was saying such out of character stuff”).
