Malleus’ favorite food is listed as “ice cream” in his EN profile but it is actually frozen desserts as a whole. He explains, “When I breathe fire, the inside of my mouth gets hot. Having a frozen treat at that point enhances their flavor even more.”
Malleus buys 5000 madol (50 thaumarks) worth of popsicles, shaved ice and ice cream during New Years, saying, “Frozen treats are delicious whether you eat them in the height of summer or the depths of winter.”
It seems that this is a preference that Malleus has had for a long time: he tells a story about a time he accidentally froze part of the castle in which he grew up (along with the people inside of it) and Lilia crushed it with his weapon, added syrup and turned it into a treat for him when he was a child.
Malleus explains,
“The treat itself was merely ice with syrup on top. Nonetheless…it was rather pleasant eating with that many people around the table. Normally l’d either sit there alone or just with Grandmother.”
Lilia says that he made a great deal of frozen treats in the past:
“At first, all I could make was simple fare-shaved ice topped with nectar or fruit juice…but a certain someone eagerly devoured that whenever I made it. I didn’t want him to get bored of it, so I started adding more flourishes-condensed milk, honeyed fruits, things like that.”
Lilia provides more background to Malleus’ preference as well:
“It wasn’t simply that he wanted a tasty treat, but good company to enjoy it with. It’s the same for me. I never used to care what I ate, as long as it filled my stomach. But even though frozen treats are hardly filling, they’d taste oddly delicious when he and I ate them together. Ever since he grew out of his tantrums, I’ve had far fewer occasions to make him shaved ice…”
