A comparison of the official English translation of volume 4 of the Twisted Wonderland manga vs. the original manga (vs. the original game vs. EN server vs. Original novel vs. EN novel)
There have been some changes to the localization of volume 4 to align it more closely to the EN adaptation of the game that may be confusing if you are a manga-only fan:
Trey’s UM “Doodle Suit” (vol. 2 of the EN manga) was renamed “Paint the Roses” in vol.4 of both the VIZ Media and Random House Worlds versions of the manga.
Though both are technically accurate to the original game (more here ▶︎), it may be considered a continuity error, as Trey explains in-story that it is the same spell without ever acknowledging that its name has suddenly changed (onyly from an English-reader perspective, as the name is consistent in the original manga).
In this same scene in the EN game Trey’s Doodle Suit/Paint the Roses was localized under yet another name (“Sleight of Hand”) for reasons unknown, later corrected to Paint the Roses. More here ▶︎
Deuce was also changed in vol.4:
During volumes 1 through 3 of the EN manga he refers to all upperclassmen as “Mr. last-name”, but from volume 4 Deuce calls everyone by their first name with no honorifics in the EN manga in both the original VIZ Media release and the Random House Worlds reprint (in the original game/manga he is consistently using last-name-senpai, with only story-significant exceptions. Original Riddle’s Mother: A low-carb cake made with soy flour and nuts, packed with lecithin to help make you smarter.
EN Riddle’s Mother: …I ordered a low-sugar recipe made of nuts and soy flour, with plenty of lecithin to make you smarter.
While Riddle’s mother originally does not specify if she made Riddle’s birthday cake, in the English localization that she ordered the cake was added to her dialogue.
In Book 7, however, Riddle presents a cake to visitors that his mother has made herself, with Ortho guessing that it is a representation of the kind of sweets that his mother from his memories would make, so it is possible that the cake from the flashback was actually homemade by Riddle’s mother, in contrast to the new detail added to the English-language adaptation.
Original Game/Manga, Riddle’s Mother: Your mother has something to do.
Original Novel: “Very well. Mother has something to attend to, so I shall see you again in one hour.” Mother left the room. At this time every day, she has an engagement she simply cannot miss.
EN Game: I need some time to prepare the lesson materials.
EN Manga: Your mother has some business to take care of.
EN Novel: “Excellent. I have an errand to run, so I will see you in an hour.” Mother smiled and left the room. She had a work engagement every day at this time that she absolutely could not miss.
There are many fan theories about what it is that Riddle mother was doing for one hour every day when he was a child that may confuse EN-game players, as the EN game invented a reason for why she was leaving that does not exist in canon, while the EN novel specifies a “work engagement,” which the original novel does not.
Cater calls Grim “Gri-chan” consistently in the original game, manga novel, while his EN-manga nicknames include “G-rim” (vol.2) and “Grimmy boy” (vol.4). This inconsistency was upheld in the Random House Worlds reprint of the manga.
EN-Game and EN-Novel Cater’s nickname for Grim is “Grimmy.”
Original Game/Manga Cater: Your whole, “not saying what you think” thing is really not good.
EN Game Cater: I should have learned by now that keeping your feelings on the DL is not a great idea.
EN Manga Cater: You have a habit of keeping your thoughts to yourself. And I don’t think it’s such a great idea.
