Twisted Wonderland Character Songs Creators’ Interview: Riddle Rosehearts, Red Heart Rage

For Episode #34 of Twisted Radio Station Ruggie’s VA Ichikawa Aoi (🍩) interviewed Twisted Wonderland’s music composer Ozawa Takumi about the creation of the character songs along with Aozora Ichika, who wrote the lyrics for 11 of the 14 songs (including dorm songs).

※Note: not literal translations, only summaries of the conversations.

Ozawa: This song is Riddle’s anger. The explosion of his rage. Maybe one of the fastest songs I’ve ever made. When I was making it I was thinking, “I can’t keep up with this!” I’d never really heard 🌹 (Riddle’s VA Hanae Natsuki) sing a song as rough as this one and there were parts where I couldn’t imagine how it would turn out. But the moment I heard him in the recording studio I went, “Uwa—! So cool!” I asked him to sing in his “Ugiii”* way, and I was surprised by how cool it turned out.

*Note: the ”Ugiii” yell that Riddle does in the game is a reference to the Japanese-language dub of the original Alice in Wonderland movie and the Queen yelling in the courtroom scene.

Ozawa: I knew 🌹 was good, but I had no idea he could sing like this. In the studio we were yelling, “OKAY! THAT’S THE BEST! GREAT!” ww

Aozora: The music is anger at full throttle, so to meet that strength I chose the strongest words that I could for the lyrics. I thought about going with more normal lyrics, but there is also Riddle’s immaturity to consider, his straight-forwardness, and I couldn’t ignore that.

I wanted to put his character forward just as he is, truly THE character song.

The title of the Heartslabyul song, Obedience, I put that into the lyrics, too. I did the same with the other songs, looking for balance between the solo songs and dorm songs while taking inspiration from the original movies and from Twst itself, mixing it all together and then writing. Everything has to be connected.
