For Episode #34 of Twisted Radio Station Ruggie’s VA Ichikawa Aoi (🍩) interviewed Twisted Wonderland’s music composer Ozawa Takumi about the creation of the character songs along with Aozora Ichika, who wrote the lyrics for 11 of the 14 songs (including dorm songs).
※Note: not literal translations, only summaries of the conversations.
Ozawa: This song has a totally different vibe compared to the dorm song “Far-Out.” It really has this downer kind of atmosphere. I imagined something like Jamil’s mental age, his mature vibe. But at the same time he’s hiding that smoldering part inside while keeping a cool face.
So with that in mind, in the A-melody and B-melody, he speaks calmly, and then in the chorus and D-melody there’s a sudden burst of emotions that he can’t hold back. Then it pulls back again. That kind of instability.
🍩: There’s that part where he switches into falsetto and comes back, right? That really shows Jamil’s…kind of sensitivity, or nervousness. Instability.
Aozora: 🐍 (Jamil’s VA Futaba Kaname) is such a skilled singer.
Ozawa: We know his singing ability and we were very assured. It was just like, “Yeah, you can do this, right? No problem? You can hit that note, right?” And I think we really made use of his strengths, here. Things like suddenly dropping out of falsetto, that kind of control takes real skill. He sang exactly how I had in mind. I was really impressed.
Aozora: Ozawa-san wrote the lyrics for the Scarabia dorm song, but I wrote Jamil’s solo song since it has a completely different atmosphere. Jamil is quite mentally mature, so in the lyrics I was conscious of showing a bit of that adult-like side of him. Also, Jamil’s “DOKKAN!!” moment during his Overblot is so striking that I wanted to express that in the lyrics using different words. That was the first thing I decided on.
This goes for all the songs, but when I write lyrics I listen to the track on repeat and eventually start imagining different scenes as I go. I then incorporate that imagery into the lyrics. With this song that imagery came to me pretty quickly. It was one of the easier ones to visualize.
🍩: What kind of imagery?
Aozora: That would be a spoiler! While recording with 🐍, whenever I asked him to do something like make his voice rougher or increase the emotion he would immediately say, “Understood!,” and do so on command.
🍩: Something I heard is that, whenever 🐍 finished singing a part, he would look up like this.
Ozawa: His face was kind of hidden behind the mic, but every time he finished singing he would look up like “How was that!? Was that good!?” That was what it felt like. It was a lot of pressure.
🍩: That is so funny.
(When character songs were first revealed via livestream on 2025/6/22, Jamil’s VA Futaba Kaname commented the following:)
“It was difficult. The low parts are so low and the high parts are so high. When I first received the music I thought, ‘This is going to be so hard!’ The differences in tone are so extreme. And it’s a ballad. Every time I sing as Jamil it is emphasized to me how important the lyrics are, and ballads are even more so, and so I have to be even more careful.
There is so much meaning in each every line, and I did so many takes searching for the best way to portray them. But there is a part where ‘ah, ah, ah, ah’ is sung repeatedly, and I got that on my first take. Singing that part felt really good.
There was a lot of technical skill and emotion put into this song, so I hope people listen closely and notice all the different elements in it.”
