Twisted Wonderland Character Songs Creators’ Interview: Vil Schoenheit, Crépuscule

For Episode #34 of Twisted Radio Station Ruggie’s VA Ichikawa Aoi (🍩) interviewed Twisted Wonderland’s music composer Ozawa Takumi about the creation of the character songs along with Aozora Ichika, who wrote the lyrics for 11 of the 14 songs (including dorm songs).

※Note: not literal translations, only summaries of the conversations.

Ozawa: For this one I was told to create a musical-style song meant to be really belted out. I imagined a climactic scene in a musical that Vil-sama is performing in, like “this is the tearjerker moment!” It starts off kind of bright, with a sense of hope, but in the chorus it explodes, like “pour out your emotions with everything you’ve got!”

🍩: This song is so sad. Vil wants to shine the brightest, wants to be seen, the most beautiful object of admiration. But the way he calls out to the mirror, and how there’s no response, I always feel like, “Vil-sama~…” It really hits me emotionally.

Aozora: But Vil-sama really is shining. It’s the viewer who ends up with their heart gouged out.

🍩: Yeah, Vil himself isn’t in despair over it.

Aozora: Exactly. I don’t think it’s a sad song.

🍩: We’re the ones who end up feeling sad somehow, while he’s just radiantly shining. That contrast is really powerful.

Aozora: When writing the lyrics, I could really see Vil-sama standing on stage. And since 👑 (Vil’s VA Aiba Hiroki) is a musical theater actor it was easy to imagine. I tried to make the lyrics feel as musical-like as possible.

More than the dorm song, I was focused on staying close to Vil’s emotional state. Vil says, “I’m the most beautiful of all,” but then we see how that obsession traps him. So I used words like “beautiful,” “beauty,” phrases like “Look at me,” “Only look at me” repeatedly to express that progression. In the chorus, and especially the second chorus, I had this image in my head of Vil-sama shining, and I almost started crying as I wrote. Once 👑 vocal’s were added, I really did cry.

🍩: The image I got when I listened to the song was Vil, standing alone on stage, in front of a mirror. And at the end he refuses to turn back to face it. He doesn’t show his face. That’s just my personal interpretation.

Aozora: During Vil-sama’s Overblot his voice sounded completely different. That difference left a big impression on me, so for the final line in the lyrics we asked 👑 to infuse it with that slightly shadowy tone from the Overblot. That turned out so well. I really hope people picture Vil-sama beseeching the mirror each time they hear that part. I get chills every time.

(When character songs were first revealed via livestream on 2025/6/22, Vil’s VA Aiba Hiroki commented the following:)

“It’s a slow ballad that starts with piano, so there is the difficulty of not being able to cover for yourself with high energy. There’s a calm, gentle feel, leaving me wondering ‘What would be the best way to express this?,’ while handling the words with care.

I also received a detailed explanation of the piece. I performed from the perspective of Vil-sama, dreaming of stepping on stage and becoming the star of the show, and that was difficult. But the recording process was actually very enjoyable.

I’m happy that I was able to share it with everyone today for the first time. Thank you so much.”
