Q: Did Vil write and/or choreograph “Absolutely Beautiful”?

Twst often uses vague phrasing, neither confirming nor denying a thing only to surprise us years later by proving all assumptions wrong, and this may be one of those instances.

(note: the translation above is awkward in English as it has been recreated as literally as possible, including dropping personal pronouns where Vil does not use them.)

Vil’s original dialogue is fairly open ended: he establishes himself as the subject before saying that an original song has been prepared and that the choreography is going to incorporate jazz, so it would be correct to translate this as Vil saying, “I prepared this original song and I will be incorporating jazz into the original choreography,” as if he is the person who did both things.

But his use of “prepared” is interesting. He does not technically say outright that he created the song and/or wrote the choreography, but he also does not say he “had them” prepared by someone else–he is the one who prepared them.

So which is it?

This exact question was asked on Yahoo! Questions back in 2021, where there were two answers, both of which agreed that the phrasing is unclear:

It’s not explicitly stated, but in “5-24 New Song Excite!” of Chapter 5 Vil says things like “the original song is complete,” “the original song I have prepared” etc., so it seems likely that Vil either composed it himself or maybe asked an acquaintance, like a composer, to create it for him.

It’s unclear, but I think Vil likely composed it himself.

In contrast the English-language adaptation leaves much less to the imagination, with Vil’s lines written as “the original song I had commissioned for us” and “I’ve also arranged for original choreography,” neither of which he actually said.

It is possible that Aniplex USA decided to confirm “no” on Vil’s behalf rather than leave things open for interpretation as the original game has done, but the original game has also been consistent in teaching us the dangers of making assumptions.

Will this come back to haunt the English-language translation in the future (as has happened several times before), or will there maybe be a later reveal that Vil has contacts in the music industry that he utilized for the VDC, and did not actually write the song or do the choreography himself? Only time will tell.
