Q: Does Leona have a favorite first year student?

We cannot emphatically say, “This first-year student is Leona’s favorite” until he says so for himself (and Leona is extremely sarcastic, so even then skepticism is advised) but we can certainly look at his past interactions:

Leona and Jack

Leona and Jack naturally have the most overlap as they share a dorm, and possibly the most complex relationship when compared to Leona and the other first-year students. Leona’s entire dorm vignette revolves around Leona and Jack sizing each other up.

A collection of information on Leona and Jack’s relationship from Leona’s character sheets can be found here: Leona and Jack pt 1Leona and Jack pt 2Leona and Jack pt 3

And another collection from Jack’s character sheets is here: Jack and Leona pt 1Jack and Leona pt 2Jack and Leona pt 3

Their relationship is particularly complicated because both characters are infamous for saying one thing but then doing something else (i.e. Jack says he does not admire Leona, but when Rook recommends that he confer with someone he respects and admires, Leona is the first person he goes to. Leona will tell Jack to do things on his own and refuse to interfere, but then follow up to make sure that he is all right, etc.), but they do seem fond of one another in their own way.

Leona and Epel

Epel might have the second-most overlap with Leona as a member of the Spelldrive team, but we do not actually see them together very often.

A short collection of information on their relationship can be read here: Leona and Epel (and Vil)Epel and Leona

Epel seems to greatly respect Leona, saying that he would like Leona to be his big brother, that he is kind, caring and dependable.

Leona’s opinions on Epel are more rare, but Ace teases Leona about pretending that he doesn’t care while immediately going to Epel’s aid during Halloween, and Leona also gifts Epel with Spelldrive merchandise for his favorite team for his birthday, so he seems fond of him.

Leona and Sebek

Leona seems neutral on Sebek, which Sebek does not like at all: his entire Vargas Camp vignette revolves around him trying to get Leona to remember his name.

A collection of information on Sebek and Leona from Leona’s character sheets can be found here: Leona and Sebek

And from Sebek’s character sheets, here: Sebek and Leona

Leona and Ortho

Leona also seems neutral about Ortho, while being more patient with him than he is with older characters. He does not retaliate after Ortho compares him to an animal during Book 6 (earning him mockery from others).

A short collection of information on Leona and Ortho is here: Leona, Riddle and Idia (also Ortho)Ortho, Azul and Leona

Leona and Ace

Leona has overlapped a few times with Ace, and Ace has consistently failed to leave a good impression: Ace says “Aren’t you supposed to be a housewarden? How about showin’ some leadership?” to Leona’s face, accuses him of endangering Riddle and using him as a shield to protect himself from Floyd. Ace also mocks him about Cheka.

Ace tries to get on Leona’s good side during Halloween, saying that he had his misconceptions but, “It’s you an’ me from now on!,” but almost immediately after which he calls Leona an “insufferably smug tough guy.”

Leona is not amused, saying, “You’ve made it crystal clear what you think of me. So much for that newfound admiration of yours. From now on, you’re on your own. I don’t care who comes at you, or what happens to you. Ain’t my problem,” to Epel’s delight, but Leona does save Ace from being captured during Playfulland.

Leona gifts Ace with a salad from the cafeteria for his birthday that Ace suspects he just wanted to throw away, but he does rescue Ace from danger during the Playfulland event.

Leona and Deuce

Deuce may be the first-year student with which Leona has the least amount of overlap. They Duo together for Leona’s Birthday Boy card but Deuce was not his interviewer and Deuce greets him during New Year but Leona does not respond.

While they overlap in Book 2, they do not seem to ever actually interact.

Leona’s Vargas Camp vignette might be the only time they have a conversation.
