Riddle and Tradition

In contrast to Idia, Leona and Jamil, who have expressed dissatisfaction with tradition, Cater says that Riddle “is all about tradition. Probably more than previous housewardens.”

Upon learning of Leona’s plans for the spelldrive tournament of Book 2 Riddle says, “I cannot allow such an important tradition to be tarnished by personal grudges,” and he also says that he can appreciate Noble Bell College’s “respect for old and long-standing traditions.” 

In his first year Vil asked Riddle why he insists on wearing high heels when he doesn’t “seem the type” to wear high heels because he likes them, and Riddle explains it is tradition: “I had my uniform tailored to match that of our first housewarden…I believe that the head of a dorm honoring the Queen of Hearts should abide by tradition, which includes dressing formally.”

Discovering Jack in the Heartslabyul lounge Riddle says, “To think we have a guest and no one has deigned to offer him tea. What an affront to our storied tradition of hospitality.”

When explaining to Malleus why he is expending all his efforts to find a solution to the issue the school faces during the Ghost Marriage event, Riddle asks, “Why would I flout tradition?”

Also seaking to Malleus, on the subject of his birthday interview Riddle says, “This is a campus tradition. It would be unacceptable to waste even a second of time.” (Malleus: “You’re quite strict about these things. As one should expect of the Heartslabyul housewarden, I suppose.”)

Riddle is not pleased by Ruggie comparing the “nonsensical architecture” of the Spectral Soiree event to Heartslabyul, saying that his dorm’s design adheres to tradition, and similarly disapproves of mockery of tea parties during the first NBC event (“Tea parties are a strict Heartslabyul tradition. Are you mocking them?!”).

On the subject of his Equestrian Club outfit Riddle says, “They say the design of this competition uniform has remained unchanged since the club’s founding. Wearing it makes me feel as though I am clothed in the academy’s tradition.”
