Trey and Riddle met for the first time around Trey’s ninth birthday when Trey and Chenya knocked on the window to the room that Riddle was in at home. Trey explains, “We were curious what the boy living in the fanciest house in the neighborhood was like, so we snuck into his family’s garden.”
The group of Book 7 arrives in Riddle’s city 300 meters away from Trey’s family’s patisserie. Trey says, “If you head down this street in the opposite direction, you’ll find Riddle’s house on a small hill.”
Trey has said that the time that he, Chenya and Riddle spent together was “for one or two months, tops,” and mentioned playing croquet and with a soccer ball, but after his mother discovered them and that Riddle had eaten a slice of strawberry tart, she lectured Trey’s entire family for five hours.
At first Trey claims it is now “a funny anecdote,” but the others suspect otherwise, with Cater saying, “Trey might be downplaying it, but that had to be traumatic for him, right?,” while Idia says, “If that was me, I’d never go near Riddle again. How does Trey manage to be his vice housewarden in reality? Does he have literal nerves of steel?”
Trey says, “I’ll admit it was scary at the time. I had no idea why I was even getting yelled at to start with. I was worried that I’d done something terrible. And I felt extra guilty when I thought about how Riddle was getting reamed even worse than I was.”
This possibly ties in to his inability to scold Riddle: Trey explains, “I can’t even imagine how hard (Riddle) must have had it” and that “Scolding him is something | just can’t do,” possibly so as not to replicate the treatment he received from his mother.
In flashbacks we see that Riddle initially refused to sneak outside to play and to eat the tart, but Trey convinced him to break the rules, possibly adding to Trey’s guilt.
In Book 1 Ace blames Trey for what Riddle has become, saying, “You’re going easy on him because he had it rough as a kid? Don’t you see where that’s leading?,” but later he tells Riddle that it is his own fault for failing to make a friend who will correct his poor behavior.
In the aftermath of Riddle’s overblot Trey apologizes for pretending not to notice Riddle’s suffering, tells him he was wrong and to apologize, which Riddle does.
Trey has been banned from Riddle’s house (he encourages Riddle to visit his family’s shop during winter break but Riddle does/could not), and Cater tells him “You’re looking pretty rough” after Riddle invites him over in his dream (“But your mother…”).
Trey considers throwing out the strawberry tart that he has brought and Cater says, “If I were in your shoes, I’d never have agreed to go to Riddle’s house to start with.”
Trey is shocked by the Riddle’s dream-mother being happy to welcome people that Riddle introduces as his friends, and when Riddle is surprised by the tart he has brought he immediately responds, “I knew it was bad idea! I’ll get rid of it right now!” When Riddle announces it to his dream-Mother he asks, “Is it safe to tell her that?!”
When Riddle’s mother seems delighted Trey breathes a sigh of relief, saying, “My heart was about to leap out of my chest! I was ready for his mom to start shrieking in outrage…”
Ortho observes, “I’m detecting fluctuations in your vital signs arising from an extreme state of tension.
I recommend sitting down and resting,” and Trey responds, “I can’t believe myself… I’m not a kid anymore. Before this, I was treating the whole experience as a funny anecdote in hindsight. But I guess I still tense up in fear of her yelling at me with that angry glower again…”
Trey apologizes in Book 1 for pretending not to notice Riddle’s suffering, possibly paralleled in Book 7 when Chenya asks if they can really wake Riddle up from his happy dream and Trey responds, “He’s a twisted, thorny tyrant, and he’s hurt a lot of people. He’s hurt us, and himself…We can’t pretend that never happened!”
Also in Book 1 Trey decides to join the fight against an overblotted Riddle because “There’re too many things I’ve left unsaid” and, after reunited with Riddle at the end of Book 7, Trey says, “I’ve got so much I want to tell you now that you’re awake.”
Vil tells Trey, “Let me know if Riddle ever decides to have your head. My dorm would hire you on as our patissier in a heartbeat,” but we learn from Cater that Trey has been on the receiving end of Riddle’s unique magic in the past, and possibly multiple times: Cater says, “I’ll never forget the day Trey broke the rules, and Riddle Offed him for the first time,” and that while he is sure that Riddle was “just treating everyone equally” and he does not really blame Riddle for it, “there’s no way it didn’t wear on (Trey) mentally, IMO” (we see Trey collared again in Riddle dream).
Trey tells Vil, “I don’t get stressed out over Riddle,” but Vil seems unconvinced (“If you say so. Far be it from me to argue”).
In his ceremonial robes vignette Trey comments on calling the day a success when they manage to “avoid having Riddle explode in a blaze of anger” (“Still, I thought this day would never end”) and he has a voice line about Riddle and Cater being particular about table settings (“Who do they think has to get it all ready?”), so it is maybe possible that he feels more stress than he is willing to admit to Vil.
When Cater comments on Riddle’s “foul mood” in a vignette Trey says, “He hasn’t blown up yet today, so that’s progress, right? He’s working hard in his own way,” and Cater responds, “And there it is! You’re giving him a pass! Have you pampered him like that since you guys were kids, or what? I haven’t been around you guys that long, but doesn’t it ever get…exhausting?” Trey replies, “Maybe he’s just feeling the pressure of responsibility now that he’s housewarden.”
We see various examples of Trey downplaying Riddle’s actions in the game, and when he tells Riddle not to worry and “just try to rest” after his overblot Ace responds, “that’s just the sort of coddling that led to him going nuts in the first place!”
When Cater comments on Riddle’s rage during the opening ceremony Trey says, “This is his first orientation as housewarden, after all. He’s probably on edge,” and when Cater fails to memorize a study guide that Riddle prepares for him Trey tells Cater, “Put some effort into your memorization. Our housewarden took a lot of time out of his busy schedule to make this for you.”
When Riddle becomes enraged with guests during Halloween Trey says, “In Riddle’s defense, he was exercising a lot of restraint. He knew he was dealing with guests,” and during Book 1 Trey explains, “I know he can come off a bit harsh, but he’s not a bad guy. Everything he does, he does because he thinks it’ll improve the dorm. And as long as you are following the rules, Riddle isn’t so scary.”
When calming a panicking Heartslabyul student who wants to transfer out of the dorm Trey assures him, “It’ll be okay. We’ll go talk to the housewarden.”
Trey tells Cater that Riddle “didn’t have a reputation for getting angry before,” but when Ace teases him about not being serious about his studies in his early days at NRC Trey responds, “When I knew Riddle was coming the year after me? Of course I was. Could you imagine what he would have said if l’d flunked any one of my classes?”
We see multiple examples of Trey flattering Riddle: after Riddle complains about Grim’s orientation rampage Trey says, “At least everything quieted down thanks to you. Everyone’s grateful, I’m sure,” and after Riddle threatens the students of Heartslabyul with a beheading if festivities are not prepared in time Trey follows with, “Well done, Riddle. You always know exactly what to say.”
Riddle replies, “You are too soft, Trey. You must learn to scold them for their barefaced negligence,” and Trey responds, “Not everyone is as perfect as you.”
When Riddle says that the Queen of Hearts would not have been so lenient Trey assures him, “I’ll try harder to act more like you and the Queen of Hearts from now on.”
Trey also praises Riddle for remembering the Queen’s laws in detail and for his odd-shaped strawberry tart (“I can tell you put a lot of work into that glaze. A fine job indeed, especially considering it was your first!”), to which Ace responds, “How about we actually TRY it before you start fawning all over him?”
After Riddle notices unpainted roses at the end of Book 1 he responds “If we work together, we should be able to get them painted in no time,” instead of punishing others, but he also does not overlook it entirely (Ace: “What? They still gotta be painted?!”), and Trey says, “I’m impressed. You’ve changed, Riddle.”
In a more candid moment during Book 7, however, Trey says, “Riddle’s strong, sure. But sometimes he can be surprisingly fragile and immature.” Trey also has a voice line of, “I know people have different opinions on this, but I think there is no one better suited to be Heartslabyul’s housewarden than Riddle.”
We see Riddle praise Trey during the first NBC event, saying, “Trey is the pride of Heartslabyul…I’m proud to have such a capable vice housewarden, truly!,” and after Ortho compliments Trey on his customer service skills during the New Year event Riddle follows with, “Of course he’s composed. The vice housewarden of Heartslabyul is used to putting up with a lot more than this.”
Trey is the one and only person whom Riddle has ever referred to as a friend.
When asked what he would like to do in the next year Riddle says he would like to get better at cooking. When asked why he explains that he was inspired by seeing try put together “an extravagant lunch” from ingredients that just happened to be in the refrigerator at the time, saying, “I was shocked. Trey had made not one, but multiple delicious dishes-all from leftovers.”
When Lilia becomes the leader of Riddle’s group during Port Fest Riddle says that he “would’ve preferred Trey to be our leader, no question.”
When the students are reunited at the end of Spectral Soiree, Trey is the first person Riddle calls out to (“And Cater and Deuce are with you too!”).
There are several examples of Trey supporting Riddle throughout the game: in a vignette he volunteers to deliver documents to Crowley on Riddle’s behalf, and he proactively provides tea and a lemon tart to Riddle during Tsumsted, saying, “I imagine this has been a stressful situation. You should try to relax while you can.”
We see Trey following up with Riddle about a meeting in a vignette, and during Spectral Soiree he assures Riddle, “Leave the support to me.”
In a vignette where Riddle is struggling to tutor Cater, Trey asks him about foods that he dislikes. When Riddle responds, “I prefer not to eat overly seasoned foods that seem unhealthy,” Trey says, “Suppose you had a whole plate of overseasoned food in front of you, and you had to clean that plate. How would you eat it?,” and Riddle replies, “Maybe I’d opt to eat the dispreferred food alongside something | DO enjoy eating…” and makes the connection to Cater’s struggles with his studies.
Riddle has Trey teach him how to create a Magicam account, which he uses to tutor Cater on the content of an upcoming test (Trey: “I sure wasn’t expecting him to get Cater to memorize spell formulas using Magicam photos and hashtags”).
Trey assures Riddle that he will keep an eye on Ace and Deuce in Book 1 (Riddle: “As vice housewarden, I trust you’ll avoid any further indiscreet conversation”), and when Cater decides to make tea for Riddle in Book 1 “as a show of deference to the Queen” Trey responds, “make sure it’s herbal tea, not black.
You know what rule 153 says about drinking tea at night.” (Cater: “…Yeaaah, sure. Of course.”)
When Trey comments on possibly slowing Riddle down during the battle against Malleus Riddle says, “How could you suggest that? Your support is the reason I was able to focus on attacking,” and he also credits Trey for the help his group receives during the Lantern event.
Vil tells Trey that Riddle is lucky to have him in Heartslabyul, saying, “You come up in the housewarden meetings on occasion, you know-it’s remarked how Riddle has an exceptional second-in-command,” but Trey responds, “I just don’t want to lose my head, is all. Nothing I do is all that praiseworthy.”
Trey is injured while protecting Riddle in Book 2, which Riddle seems to take to heart. (Trey: “It was stupid of me to intervene. So you don’t owe me anything.” – Riddle: “Still, I…”)
When Trey catches a cold after running an errand on Riddle’s behalf Riddle decides to prepare a soup to aid in his recovery (“If I don’t do something to help, my competence as a dorm leader will be called into question”), but with Lilia’s guidance the soup ends up involving twelve spoonfuls of soup stock as a base. Lilia then encourages him to add strawberry tarts, bananas, and yogurt, and the final product is described as having “a rather…pungent odor.”
Trey later reports that he “finished the whole batch off.”
In an early vignette Riddle says “Trey always was a worrier,” and when Trey encourages Riddle to keep warm at night when he himself is sick Riddle responds, “Even now, you worry about me? Really, Trey, you ought to think about yourself for once.”
We see more of Trey worrying over Riddle in Book 7 when Riddle is left alone to face his overblotted self in an abyss, asking if Riddle will “end up wandering around all alone in an abyss forever” and if there is a way to reach him. Leona responds, “You sound like an overanxious parent. Chill.”
When Cater says that Leona is right Trey says, “Don’t tease me, Cater. Especially not when you know exactly where I’m coming from…As a Heartslabyul student, I’m proud to hear Leona give Riddle the credit he deserves. But now that I’ve seen inside his dream, I can’t be entirely positive that he’ll be okay.”
When reunited with Riddle in Book 7-13 Trey greets him with, “I’m not sure where to even begin, but I’ll start with this…Riddle, I’m so glad you’re safe.”
When Riddle puts Trey in charge of leading the students to safety at the end of Book 7 Trey tells him not to do anything dangerous. Cater follows with, “PLEASE don’t make us worry than you already have!”
Leona comments on how much time Trey spends calming Riddle down, and we have seen Trey doing so throughout vignettes, events and the main story.
Occasionally we see Trey succeed, such as in the lead-up to an Unbirthday Party when he says, “Remember what we agreed on: We’re going to have a nice, pleasant party this time, with no one losing their head,” and encourages Riddle to show the first-year students a more efficient way to cut the lawn.
Riddle responds, “I…suppose you’re right. Thank you, Trey”.
After that same Unbirthday Party Riddle again becomes enraged at the first-year students and the failed cake that they present for the party. Trey says, “this is a cake created from freshmen brainstorming together. It’s emblematic of Heartslabyul, in a way. And really, isn’t that what matters?,” and Riddle responds, “No! Not in the least!”
Trey again succeeds in calming Riddle down by revealing that he had prepared a proper cake as a back up.
Ace thanks Trey for talking Riddle out of punishing them all despite the failure of a cake they made because they wanted something different from Trey’s usual Unbirthday Party cakes, and Trey responds, “You have to account for every potential mishap and have an action plan to adapt to issues as they arise. That’s why things are done in a certain, ‘samey’ way. Maintaining the peace is no easy task.”
Ace replies, “Just to be clear, you ARE talking about baking, right? ‘Cause it sounds like you’re talking about the housewarden…”
We will also see examples of Trey trying to defuse situations before Riddle has a chance to become angry in the first place: in a vignette where Riddle becomes frustrated with Jade, Trey goes to Jade after the fact to apologize on Riddle’s behalf, saying he feels guilty for “not stepping up to the plate as vice housewarden to cool him off.”
Jade responds, “Is it a vice housewarden’s duty to regulate his housewarden’s emotions as well?”
Jade then observes, “Earlier, you predicted that Riddle would come to me…and you attempted to head him off, correct? That is some quick wit, as far as I’m concerned. You are worthy of being Heartslabyul’s vice housewarden,” and Trey confirms that that is exactly what he’d intended. Jade follows with, “I see we’re both saddled with egocentric companions and suffer from their whims.”
Trey’s ceremonial robes vignette highlights the lengths that Trey will go to in order to keep Riddle from becoming angry: when Cater reveals that roses in the garden have been painted incorrectly, Trey pressures a reluctant Cater into fixing the problem with his unique magic while he distracts Riddle.
Trey’s distraction involves him asking about details pertaining to the Queen of Hearts’ laws, and when Riddle accuses him of worrying to much Trey claims that he is “so concerned about aiding (Riddle) in making tonight the perfect memory that (he) couldn’t help but fuss over every little detail.”
Riddle responds, “I had no idea you were so apprehensive,” but he believes what he is told, with Trey successfully distracting long enough for Cater to finish fixing the roses and Riddle possibly never learning the truth.
Afterwards Trey reflects, “we managed to avoid having Riddle explode in a blaze of anger, so l’d call today a success.”
In another vignette Trey promises to hide an attempted rule violation of Ace’s from Riddle as long as Ace agrees to “do what (he’s) supposed to.”
Trey has a Chat about tending to the white roses where he says, “You’re right-it’s not my turn. But that’s beside the point. If I leave it to someone else and they mess it up, Riddle gets mad. And which would you rather endure? Some rose-tending, or Riddle’s wrath?,” with Trey again preferring to take on extra work rather than deal with an angry Riddle.
When Riddle says he does not understand how his Tsum resembles him Deuce says, “Despite being so small, it’s kind of…intense.” Riddle asks, “Intense?,” and Trey intervenes, saying, “I agree it has a certain dignity about it,” which seems to please Riddle.
In Book 7 Leona suggests that, in their first year, “Maybe Trey and Cater were planning on using
Riddle for their own ends…propping up a young and impressionable king, overthrowing the old order, and starting a revolution. Then installing yourselves as regents or advisors and manipulating the king to build the kind of country you want. Happens all the time, right?”
Deuce insists that Trey and Cater would never do so, saying, “They might say mean things sometimes, but they’re caring and sincere! At least…l think they are…”
Idia agrees with Leona: “Cater and Trey are juniors at Night Raven College, AND they survived Heartslabyul at its very worst. They’ve gotta be clever and calculating.”
Leona follows with, “You can never tell what they’re thinkin’ under those smiles. Personally, I’d never pick those guys for adjutants in a million years.”
Deuce later relays to Cater what it is that his upperclassmen told him and Cater tells Idia and Leona not to give the first-year students “strange ideas,” saying, “Cay-Cay and Trey are cool, caring, dependable upperclassmen.”
Leona asks, “You can’t possibly be buying this, right, Deuce?,” and Deuce says he isn’t, but ultimately decides to believe what Cater days.
Later on Leona guesses that Riddle nominated Trey for the position of vice housewarden “and he grudgingly resigned himself to the job,”, but Cater explains that’s not what happened:
“I remember the way Trey talked with everyone when he saw Riddle at orientation. He was so happy that an old friend from back home had enrolled at school. Trey vouched for Riddle after he got sorted into Heartslabyul, too.” Cater says that, after reuniting with Trey, “Riddle acted all formal with Trey, like he’d forgotten everything they’d shared as kids. Riddle went on to defeat the previous housewarden and became the new one, all in his first week. Everyone was super off-put by the way Riddle went around beheading people over every tiny little rule infraction. Who would wanna volunteer as vice housewarden in THAT climate? So Riddle said he was putting the position up to a dorm vote.”
Trey was the winner of the dorm-wide vote, with Cater saying, “it’s gotta be max levels of awkward working with an old friend who’s become so radically different.”
Cater guesses that Chenya being in Trey’s dream might have been a manifestation of Trey’s wish that Chenya was around when things got rough, but Leona says, “Even if that tabby cat had gone to our school, I doubt he would’ve been able to stop Riddle from acting like that.”
Trey says that the Riddle was completely different when they first met, to the point that he “almost questioned if it wasn’t someone else who happened to share his name. But looking back on it now, he was the spitting image of his mom, the way he raged and yelled while the teachers held him back.”
Cater explains, “The day after orientation, he marched right up to Trey in our dorm hallway all like, ‘Excuse me, Trey Clover. I understand that all students in this school may challenge the housewarden to a duel. Is there paperwork required for this?’,” which resulted in Trey, Cater and Riddle all going to Crowley’s office together to ask about the formal procedure.
Trey says, “We had such high hopes that he’d lead the dorm in a better direction once he took the top spot…Riddle ruled through power and fear to keep the Heartslabyul students in line. And he grew more and more isolated.”
In a flashback from shortly after Riddle became housewarden we see Trey attempt to calm him down, assuring him that the students just aren’t sure what to do with themselves after their housewarden changed a week after the start of school.
Riddle responded, “YOU’RE SOFT! The reason things are so dire is because you upperclassmen condone their indolent behavior,” in possibly a parallel to Trey’s acceptance of Riddle’s own behavior becoming the main issue of Book 1.
Trey attempts to rein in Riddle’s anger again right before his overblot by using his unique magic to intercept animated rose trees that Riddle orders to tear Ace into pieces, to which Riddle responds, “Are YOU going to tell me that I’m wrong too? After all l’ve done to protect the rule of law?! Do you know how much I’ve suffered for this?! I… I refuse to believe this!”
When the first-years decide to stand their ground against Riddle rather than evacuate Trey chooses to join them, saying, “I don’t want to lose him. There’re too many things I’ve left unsaid,” and, “Riddle’s body can’t take much more of this. We need to stop him before it’s too late!”
When Trey downplays his own abilities in Book 7, asking why the group would need his help against Riddle, Ace points out that Trey’s unique magic lets him overwrite Riddle’s magic. Trey responds, “that only worked because Riddle was more agitated than he’d ever been before. That’s not something I can normally do…When I did that, it was like an emergency adrenaline rush. I honestly don’t think it would work again.”
Later he says that he was lucky to be able to do it at all the first time, but Silver suggests that it might not have been luck, saying, “Wishes are pure things with a great and unshakable power. You must have had a strong wish in your heart, to stop your friend’s violence. And in that moment, your wish was more powerful than Riddle’s magic.”
Trey’s dream of Book 7 features Chenya as Housewarden of Heartslabyul instead of Riddle (Leona: “Both of Riddle’s adjutants had dreams where he’s been replaced as the boss. I’m startin’ to feel bad for the guy”).
Idia says, “This proves that the whole time he’s been smiling away at Riddle’s side, he’s been discontent and secretly wishing someone else was in charge,” but Ortho reminds them, If something’s different from reality, that doesn’t necessarily equate to the dreamer being unhappy with the status quo.”
The Riddle of Trey’s dream is a normal Heartslabyul student who loves studying magic and “is the best and most knowledgeable mage out of (their) whole group.” When Leona asks why Riddle isn’t housewarden Trey explains that (much like in reality) Riddle challenged Chenya for the Housewarden seat soon after he enrolled, but Chenya’s unique magic makes him impervious to Riddle’s own, and Riddle refused to attack Chenya with his other spells.
Leona observes, “He’s got a dorm kitchen bigger’n the cafeteria’s that he can use whenever, plus lenient rules, a trusted pal as housewarden, and a version of Riddle who pulls his punches against his childhood friend.”
With Chenya as housewarden, Trey is also free to prepare food for others without having to follow the rule that requires the Housewarden gets the first taste (“Our housewarden wouldn’t get bent out of shape over that”).
In Riddle’s dream the walls of his living room are covered in photos from school activities and vacations that also feature Trey, and Trey reveals that they are all false memories that Riddle invented in his dream (Riddle: “Aren’t they all just perfect?”).
In the rose maze of Riddle’s dream Trey identifies a Cater-of-darkness by pretending that Cater once got a form to begin the procedure of challenging Riddle for the Housewarden position. Trey reflects, “What was it again? If you can’t imagine something, then you can’t manifest it in a dream? I guess since Riddle got his spot by overthrowing the last housewarden, it makes sense he’d expect some challenges himself.”
In a vignette we see Trey cultivating strawberries for strawberry tarts for Riddle. Rook exclaims, “Such profound loyalty! That’s what makes you the Chevalier!”
Trey responds, “Riddle and I go way back, so I happen to know what he likes. That’s all there is to it,” but Rook is unconvinced, saying, “From where I’m standing, your bond appears to go far deeper than that. Just remember that overwatering a flower can make it wilt just as surely as underwatering does. Don’t go breaking any hearts.”
When Jade asks Trey for permission to use his strawberries at Mostro Lounge Trey refuses, at first, but eventually concedes in exchange for a strawberry tart from a renowned patisserie.
Rook asks if “a strawberry tart made with (Trey’s) love might make Riddle happier” and Trey responds, “even if Riddle considers himself a discerning critic of all things cake, his palate isn’t all that refined. He’ll be delighted when he finds out this’s from a famous patisserie. I don’t have to make a whole tart from scratch for him to be happy.”
This seems to surprise both Rook and Jade (“I had Trey pegged as the type who’d rather feed Riddle homemade treats baked with love”), but Trey says, “Love has nothing to do with it. My main priority is keeping my housewarden from going berserk with his tyrant mode. That way, all’s right with the world, as they say.”
Rook responds, “I had considered you Riddle’s loyal knight, but it seems I erred a bit in my perception. Trey, you are quite the cunning man.”
Despite disparaging Riddle’s unrefined palate behind his back, when Trey presents the store-bought tart to Riddle he says, “it’s a small price to pay for something worthy of serving at a tea party hosted by our esteemed housewarden. I can only hope it suits your palate, Riddle.”
Riddle responds, “I HAVE had my fair share of strawberry tarts. But considering all the trouble you went to to get this one, I’ll make certain to savor it.” (Trey; “You honor me.”)
Following the opening ceremony Trey excuses himself from Cater to serve a mincemeat pie, saying, “I made sure to time it such that it’ll be hot out of the oven when it hits the table.” Cater replies, “I dunno if you’re an amazing cook or just waaay too devoted to Riddle.” (Trey: “Ha ha… Call it whatever you want.”)
In preparation for an Unbirthday Party Trey says that he has been careful about selecting the students who will be assisting him, as, “the housewarden is very particular about cake.”
In another vignette Trey presents Riddle with another cake, prepared by himself and his tsum.
Riddle will often reference Trey and his cooking, wondering in an Eternity Float voice line how many lemons Trey would need to make a lemon tart for him and inviting the prefect to tea by saying, “Trey should be finished baking right about now.”
After trying a crostata for the first time Riddle says, “I wonder if Trey would make this for me if I asked,” and when Kalim invites him to a party Riddle decides to have Trey prepare a pie for him to bring along as a gift.
When Trey talks about Halloween treats during the first NBC event Riddle comments on how the treats made by Trey are “quite intricately made.”
During the Eternity Float event Riddle asks jade about using sea salt in confections. When Jade confirms that “saltiness can further accentuate the sweetness” Riddle responds, “Then Trey should appreciate it. I’ll take the opportunity to pick some sea salt up for him.”
Similarly, Trey purchased fried fruit (Pineapples, oranges, kiwis, bananas, dates) during the Firelit Sky Event, saying he intends to use them the next time he makes a tart for Riddle. In a vignette where Trey has made too much cake for Riddle, he offers a piece to Vil.
In preparation for visiting Riddle’s dream in Book 7, Trey brings along one whole strawberry tart “just to be on the safe side.”
During the Wish Upon a Star event Trey encourages Riddle to purchase a food processor for the dorm, which Riddle agrees to if it “will make it easier to adhere to the Queen of Heart’s rules.” Trey is very grateful for the purchase (Riddle: “You have nothing to thank me for. Improving a dorm’s quality of life is a housewarden’s job”), later revealing that a food processor had been his wish for the event (Cater: “You just managed to get your own wish granted, just like that?”).
In an early vignette Trey says, “I’m just glad to see Riddle light up the way he does when he gets to partake of sweets,” and a significant part of Trey’s dream is Riddle having the freedom to eat as much as he wants, which Trey says made him “truly happy.”
Trey explains, “Riddle would bristle if he heard it, but Chenya and I both think of him as a little brother. So it makes me feel good to see him eating up, and growing into the person he is now,” and the dream-Riddle says that his size was made possible by Trey “feeding (him) three whole loaded bacon quiches every day.”
Trey awakens from his dream after remembering that “Riddle strictly adheres to recommended daily nutritional allowances. He would never eat a whole cake at once,” and the Riddle of his dream saying, “Mother can’t watch over me here. Why should I care one whit about recommended allowances?”
In Riddle’s own dream he offers to spare a captured Trey in exchange for Trey promising to make tarts for him as his loyal retainer.
Towards the end of Book 7 Trey and Cater both applaud Riddle for his efforts, with Trey saying that he will bake everyone a cake to celebrate.
