Riddle says, “I have no particular qualm with exercise, but aptitude and personal preference are entirely separate beasts,” and, “A true mage excels in magic over fitness.”
When Vargas tries to remove an important piece of equipment, the field scanner, from the Beanfest event, Riddle objects as “There are plenty of students on this campus who aren’t physically inclined, but still put forth a diligent effort in PE.
The rules for Beanfest are already overwhelmingly skewed in favor of athletic students as it is. Strategy and quick thinking are supposed to bolster physical abilities. If students like myself have our tactical options removed, then the best strategy for us to bolster our grades would be to find a hiding place and spend the whole day in it,” including himself amongst those who would not be considered “athletic students.”
Vargas agrees, possibly because Riddle is the one who spoke up, saying, “That carries a lot of weight coming from you, Rosehearts. I know you always give a hundred and ten percent in my classes.”
In a gym vignette Riddle records grip strength of 30.2kg, observing, “most of my results fall below average…” and, “I doubt such numbers hold any meaning in a school of magic.”
When Kalim suggests that he and Riddle do a sprint for class together Riddle agrees on the condition that Kalim is not to say a word after they have finished. Despite how Kalim agrees to Riddle’s request, after their run he immediately says, “it’s kinda nice to see even you can’t come first in everything, Riddle.” He follows with, “Between you and Azul, I thought I was the only sophomore housewarden who wasn’t amazing at just about everything,” until Jamil cuts him off, apologizing on Kalim’s behalf.
Despite his limitations in gym classes Riddle is still considered one of Heartslabyul’s more talented spelldrive players, as stated by Cater, possibly due to his flying talents.
Riddle falls asleep at the campfire during Vargas Camp, saying, “I’m partly worn out from today, but I don’t normally burn the midnight oil either,” and Sebek sends both him and a sleeping Silver to their tents.
During the Lantern event Riddle says, he thinks he has decent baseline muscle strength, but he lacks the same endurance as Deuce and Jack, and his footwork when dancing nowhere near as agile as Kalim.
Riddle says, “I fear I may have embarrassed myself in front of you all” and Deuce responds, “That’s not true! You handled the ballet perfectly fine. I thought you were gonna be way worse at it!” (Riddle: “Has anyone ever told you that you’re honest to a fault?”)
Riddle might be sensitive about his physical limitations: after being captured by Trey and Rook during Beanfest he says, “Aren’t you both in an arts club? I’m in a sports club, and you both outran me handily. How mortifying. I’ll reflect on my own athletic shortcomings while I do weight training with Vargas in the gym.”
When Azul comments on his arms being “quite powerful, unlike (Riddle’s),” Riddle replies, “Are you saying I’m feeble?!”
Riddle has voice lines of, “You think I look unathletic? What an intriguing thing to say. Would you like to test that hypothesis?,” “An excellent mage must be physically fit. That said, Coach Vargas’s level of brawn seems excessive,” and, “One mustn’t be satisfied with only book learning.”
When Vil compliments Riddle on his dancing Riddle responds, “l’ve had an interest in social dancing since I was a child. I learned it from my mother, as part of my rigorous education. I’m more comfortable with dance routines that have set steps, rather than more liberal forms where you just move your body to the rhythm,” and Vil says, “I was giving you a compliment. Would it hurt you to take it?” Riddle responds, “It came across like you were making light of my athletic abilities.”
(Vil: “You do realize that your glass-half-empty approach is basically an advertisement for your personal issues.”)
