Ruggie suffers no side effects from dream jumping in Book 7 (unlike characters like Azul, Vil and Jade), explaining that he is in the spelldrive club’s starting lineup and, if anything, the dream jumping wasn’t enough.
Jack follows with, “There’s a reason Ruggie’s backfield prowess earned him the nickname ‘Discswiper.’ He’s the best in the game at tricky flight maneuvers. Never underestimate his aerial chops!”
It seems Ruggie’s “discswiper” name was coined by spelldrive game commentators, and Ruggie is a famous enough athlete to be recognized by new students to the school.
Epel says “You never know where or when a pass from Ruggie is gonna come at you” and Leona says, “Ruggie might slack off in practice, but in a real match he’s a terror. The kid’s hungry for victory”.
When Rook asks what Ruggie does on his days off, Ruggie replies that he doesn’t really have any: “Most days l’ve got spelldrive practice, and if there’s no practice it’s ‘cuz we’ve got a match.” (and other days he is almost always working: Ruggie’s Side Jobs)
Rook comments that Ruggie’s spelldrive prowess is likely owing to his “unpredictable flying style and keen eyes,” and while Ruggie says that flight is his best magical forte (second best: color- and outfit-changing magics), his doesn’t have the best grades in flight class.
Ruggie says that with his “measly magic capacity” he cannot go very far on a broom. Rook says, “You have exceptional balance, and your physical capabilities even allow you to fly upside down. Yet despite that, your grades in flight are merely average? Is there something lacking in your fundamentals?”
Ruggie explains, “There’s a big gap between the stuff I’m good at and the stuff I’m not so good at. I’m at my best when I’m tryin’ to avoid something. When we play broom tag in class I never get caught. Growin’ up I was always getting’ chased by real scary adults through super narrow alleys. That’s probably why. But stuff like flyin’ in a straight line or maintain’ a specific speed is a real challenge. You can’t ask me to fly all polite like the sheltered babies that go to school here.”
