Sebek and Jamil, Azul and Humans

Jamil meets Sebek for the first time when Sebek accidentally follows the Scarabia group after the opening ceremonies instead of falling in line with Diasomnia, and fails to realize his mistake.

Jamil is suspicious of Sebek as a potential assassin, which Sebek does not appreciate at first, but he warms to Jamil quickly upon realize that Jamil, like himself, is something of a bodyguard. Sebek says “I could learn a thing or two from you” but Jamil is not impressed, saying, “If you want to learn anything, I suggest you start by familiarizing yourself with our campus”.

The two overlap again in Sebek’s ceremonial robes vignette where Sebek compliments Jamil for having “rather discerning taste for a human” after Jamil compliments Malleus.

Jamil agrees to listening to Sebek talk about Malleus once they complete the task that Crowley has assigned to them, to Sebek’s delight.

Later, however, Jamil says that he did not actually expect Sebek to hold him to this promise. Jamil also says, “He’s like an entirely different person when it comes to Malleus. When admiration goes too far, the consequences can be dire.” Sebek does not seem to hear him.

Jade describes Sebek as “a born sucker” (Azul sells him a special detergent to remove a ketchup stain from Malleus’ lab coat which was Sebek’s fault, as Sebek’s attempts to clean it with magic “made the stain bigger”). But Azul is reluctant to go too far in taking advantage of Sebek, noting that “Diasomnia is also home to a number of people whose wrath we’d be unwise to incur”.

Lilia seems confident that not even Azul would dare to abuse Sebek’s naiveté, saying, “A schemer (Azul) may be, but…he knows better than to make an enemy out of Diasomnia.”

Despite Jade’s assumption, Sebek seems to be wary of Azul: in a birthday line we learn that Azul gifted Sebek with “a rare book on magic analysis”. He says, “(Azul) must be looking to curry a great deal of favor.”

Despite being half-human Sebek does not seem to have much patience for anyone who is not fae and refers to everyone else as “humans”, despite how Riddle has warned him against doing. Sebek quite clearly considers himself stronger “weak”, “paltry”, “pathetic” humans.”

Sebek calls Trey “unusually perceptive, for a human”, and when they attempt to convince some ghosts that they are companion-ghosts of three different species he says, “I can’t believe I, of all people, have to smile and lock arms with a human who calls me ‘brother’…”

During Halloween Silver asks him how Malleus is supposed to avoid any sort of interspecies hostility when Sebek is expressing “wanton hatred of humans”.

In the Glorious Masquerade event we see Sebek refer to Azul as human (no one makes a distinction between beast-people and mermaids, with the faeries referring to everyone who is not fae as “human” or “children of man”), but he corrects himself and actually refers to Azul as “Azul-senpai” upon realizing that Azul is complimenting Malleus.

It is possible that Sebek’s beloved grandfather, Baul, influenced his own use of the word “human” (more here ->).

He repeatedly refers to Rollo as “human” during Glorious Masquerade, despite Rollo’s repeated insistence that Sebek refer to him by name. During Harveston Jade comments, “Sebek has such a warm regard for humanity now. What a wonderful development,” but Idia responds, “He couldn’t care less about humans and you know it.”
