Sebek and Lilia (pt1)

Sebek was entrusted to Lilia by his grandfather for training when he was six years old and has been under his tutelage for the past decade.

He is quick to defend Lilia when he thinks that Lilia is not being paid proper respect, such as when Ace asks them why they led the ghosts to where he was during Phantom Bride.

Sebek scolds Ace for taking “an aggressive tone” with Lilia, insisting that he “learn (his) place”.

Sebek also becomes angry when Eliza rejects Lilia for being too cute, insisting “You’re even cuter than the ghost herself!”.

Sebek scolds Silver for interrupting Lilia when Lilia was speaking with Malleus, and scolds Idia for failing to “smoocharoo” Eliza at Lilia’s request.

Sebek is also an adamant supporter of Lilia’s musical endeavors.

Sebek often references having to survive in the wild with Silver as part of Lilia’s training.

Sebek is also capable of reciting “basic lessons in survival that Lilia was kind enough to teach me”.

During his second birthday vignette we learn that Lilia once took Sebek and Silver out to one of the mountains that border Briar Valley and, without any forewarning, disappeared. He left only basic tools and a note that said, “Let’s Survival ♪”.

Sebek says that, at the time, neither he nor Silver actually had any survivalist experience, whatsoever.

Lilia left the two alone on the mountain to survive as best they could for a week.

Sebek obeys what Lilia says over Silver’s instructions and, in some cases, even over Malleus, such as when he was ordered to apologize to Leona and argued the point with Malleus, but when Lilia follows up with “I think you should do as Malleus says” he responds with “Ah…yes, sir!”.

Sebek, Silver and Malleus all insist that Lilia can be terrifying on Halloween, but when Ace says that “Sebek is just a scaredy-cat” Lilia replies with, “no comment on that” and he has a voice line of “Silver and Sebek used to be scaredy cats, you know. I’d always have to do laundry the morning after Halloween”.

Silver describes scarecrows in a central plaza and Sebek says that “the terrifying part is what Lilia looks like as he dances in the light of the fiery tribute” (Lilia insists he “simply got in touch with (his) inner child and let loose a little.”)

(There are further descriptions of burning scarecrows, dancing in a circle in firelight and giant ogres, which may be in reference to multiple Disney properties such as Night on Bald Mountain, Sleeping Beauty and Nightmare Before Christmas.)

Lilia seems to enjoy pranking people in general, and Sebek in particular.

He has a line in a vignette about having “a wee bit too much fun with messing with Silver and Sebek”, but we never find out what he had been doing.

During Phantom Bride we learn that Lilia has given Sebek interesting information about dating that leads to Epel saying “Lilia’s definitely been messing with you”.

Despite Lilia’s instructions being to write letters with a fountain pen and stationary, sending a photo of himself with every third letter until the 25th full moon when he should “sit next to them on a bench in Briar Valley Central Park with a person’s worth of space between us”, Sebek reacts with rage at Epel for daring to “question Lilia’s integrity.”

We also see a wholly confident Sebek trying to convince his fellow first-years to eat steak topped with yogurt and “a variety of fermented bean” (described to be much like natto, a traditional soybean food in Japan that is infamous for being very healthy but smelling horrible).

He becomes frustrated with the others when they “doubt Lilia’s wisdom”. Jack says, “I don’t care if YOU respect ‘em, but quit tryin’ to force other people to”, and Sebek insist he is “not forcing anyone to do anything. I am merely trying to demonstrate Lilia’s wisdom!”

By the end of the vignette it is revealed that Lilia had indeed been lying to Sebek, saying that he “just said the first thing that came into my head” and laughing at Sebek for taking it seriously.

Lilia and his tsum team up together to prank Sebek during the Tsumsted event, with the tsum dropping onto Sebek’s shoulder and surprising him twice during the same conversation. Lilia observes, “It seems especially pleased by Sebek’s reaction.”

Lilia calls Sebek ”adorably trusting”, and also calls him adorable again in a chat for for calling Lilia’s magic “fascinating”.

Sebek seems to be just as fond of Lilia as Lilia is of him, boasting at Vargas Camp that his clothing was “personally endorsed by Lilia himself” and that the patches were from Lilia, “–so I made sure to apply them all!”

We also see Sebek get into a Sleepy-beauty-like argument with Silver over whether navy or red suits Lilia better. Malleus compromises with green and Sebek responds, “YOU LOOK MAGNIFICENT”.

As fond as he is of Lilia, however, it is insinuated outright in during Beanfest that he prefers Malleus. When Lilia asks if he is not a good enough teammate for Sebek he responds, “I am greatly honored to have the privilege of following a warrior as renowned as yourself into battle, of course. But even then…Malleus, well…”

When both disappear during Halloween Silver reminds Sebek that Lilia is with Malleus, wherever they are, and asks if he doubts Lilia’s capabilities. Sebek responds, “Why, I would never…” Silver says they were trained to “maneuver through harsh conditions unimpeded”, with Sebek clarifying that “At one point, he had me scaling a sheer cliff both ways, 10 times a day, for three months” (a reference to Prince Philip in the 1959 Sleeping Beauty?).

Lilia’s Tsum presents a conundrum for Sebek, as he struggles to balance scolding the tsum for troubling Lilia while also needing to speak to it respectfully for being so similar to Lila himself. (Silver: “I think he’s confused how to treat a tsum with your face.”)

Sebek is displeased by Silver commenting that Lilia might stir up trouble on campus but follows with, “Not…that I can say for certain that he WOULDN’T…” The two decide to team up and follow after Lilia and his tsum-self.

They soon discover that Lilia and his tsum are becoming infamous on campus for their constant pranks and Sebek is delighted: “It sounds like Lilia and the tsum are the talk of the campus. How splendid!”

When Lilia justifies his late-night gaming binges with “I’m retired from the field. I hardly need to stay in peak condition all the time. Besides you two will be there regardless” Sebek insists, “No, your presence is still very much needed! You remain a role model for us! A shining example we strive to emulate!”

Sebek is shocked by the revelation in Book 7 that Lilia will be dropping out of the school, reiterating that his presence is essential.

Sebek insists on joining Silver in his hunt for Malleus during Lilia’ farewell party but Lilia forbids it, saying, “Your absence would be felt if you dashed off.” Sebek reluctantly agrees to remain and attempts—but fails—to convince Lilia to wait for them to return to say goodbye.

During his dream he proudly declares, “That’s our Lilia! You always have an eye toward Briar Valley’s future.”

Sebek is often commenting on how amazing Lilia is during Book 7, saying that he was “a man famed for his peerless migh” and “no one on this continent could possible excel beyond Lilia.” Sebek becomes enraged at the trap that injures Liia at the citadel: “Foul contraption! It’s still moving?! How dare you harm Lilia!”

He and Silver both reflect upon one particular lesson that Lilia drilled into their heads practically every day  (“As long as you survive, you can worry about the rest later”) and when Lilia pats him on the head for surviving the escape from the citadel he exclaims, “I hardly deserve such a high honor!”

In a flashback we see the first day that Sebek reported to Lilia for training, greeting him with “Allow me to say what an honor it is to train under the peerless General of the Right!” Sebek reflects on how long it took to become capable of consciously using magic, and yet Lilia never lost his patience.

During the story Sebek wonders how strange it is that Lilia lives “almost like he was in hiding” in a forest far away from the capital, while usually “when major leaders retire, don’t they typically take up residence in large manors not too far from Dragonopolis.”
