Sebek, Compliments and Reprimands

It is not unusual to see Sebek getting reprimanded, and he is usually quick to apologize.

Malleus tells him to be quieter when waiting for a meeting to end, and expresses frustration at Sebek when Sebek volunteers to help him recreate the experience of trick-or-treating.

During Halloween Sebek’s solution to the Magicam Monster problem is to “eject everyone visiting here from off-campus!” Leona comments on Diasomnia being “full of antisocial shut-ins” and asks if their “gloomy king” has rubbed off on them. Sebek takes offense, but Lilia follows with “Sebek, you deserved that.”

Towards the end of the Halloween event Sebek insists on putting the Magicam Monsters “in their place” for their “sheer insolence” before they have actually broken any rules. Silver and Lilia rein Sebek in by reminding him of Malleus’ instructions, saying he runs the risk of souring Malleus’ mood, and he apologizes.

While Malleus pouts over not being invited to the school’s opening ceremonies Sebek takes offense on his behalf, saying that he “will punish them” for doing something so inexcusable. Malleus orders Sebek to drop the matter, saying, “I said I am not concerned about it.” Sebek apologizes.

Sebek is quick to compliment when he has been sincerely impressed.

He spends almost all of Epel’s school uniform vignette complimenting his apple-carving skills (“I just learned your ambition is on par with your skill! What a pleasure it’s been.”), and Epel carves an apple in the shape of Malleus for Sebek’s birthday. Sebek also compliments Deuce on idea to wear his PE uniform to a special sale at the school store, calling him “a gifted human indeed” when he realizes that Deuce was able to both complete his own shopping list and fulfill the requests of others.

During Halloween Sebek says that Vil “commands such a powerful presence”, and he is compliments both Rook and Trey by saying “Your vast knowledge aids you in solving problems and your big-picture mindset allows you to look out for others. I’ve learned much about you today.” He follows this up with, “You have my gratitude, humans!”

Sebek sounding condescending via his compliments is not unusual, with Sebek complimenting Riddle by saying, “You’ve quite the potion-brewing prowess, for a human. I shall extend my gratitude to you!”. Riddle responds with “I can never tell when you’re being sincere and when you’re mocking me!”.

When Sebek learns of Jack’s insistence on caring for his cactus he calls Jack “surprisingly diligent” for having an interest in gardening, tells Ace he is “more sensible than I’d imagined” for deciding to “not let romance distract” him and take his studies seriously, and tells Trey that, “Your magic could never compare to Malleus or Lilia’s, but it was most precise. As befits a junior, I suppose.”
